The Fall of Holland
« on: March 09, 2001, 09:25:00 AM »
I'm just starting to dig around the Fall of Holland with an eye to producing a scenario or event.

Does any one have any good links showing the LW order of battle and planning for this time period?

I'm quite interested in Armour positioning and objectives too.

The invasion only took 5 days, but some of the fighting was extremly fierce, over 80,000 men lost their lives. I'm hoping it could set the scene for a furious low level blitzkrieg assault.

Actually the fierceness of the blitzkrieg ebbed away pretty quick, after day three/four the front was in a stalemate. This after the battles for the Afsluitdijk & the Grebbelinie positions where the Germans repeatedly failed to break to the dutch defences and suffered extremely heavy losses. Hence the bombing of Rotterdam. Of course eventually the Germans would have overcome Holland but at a very heavy cost. Airsuperiority was pretty quick to fall in German hands though...

Point: For Scenario purposes it might be wise to wait till we get Fokker D.XXI's (Finns will kill for this one too), Fokker G1's and of course Emil's and Bf 110C's and Ju52's/He111's. I think there are more interesting early war air battles to portray than this fairly limited one though, after all the blitz in holland was mainly ground fighting with the air action being quite one-sided.

I'll go and dig for some books and publications though cause there have been lots and lots of them being written on this topic!

Thanks Thud.

I'd be gratefull for what ever you can dig up.

Does any one know when the next AH scenario is coming? Single frame events don't really "do it" for me...

Seeker,

I've found several interesting sites on the aerial warfare in may 1940 over Holland... One of them is very detailed and has very reliable data. It's made by an official of the Dutch Military Aviation Museum which is owned by the Royal Netherlands Airforce and has access to all possible official data on the fall of Holland. It's by far the best documented site on this subject that I could find, and I don't think there is anything like it out there.

The only drawback is that it's completely in dutch. If you are really interested I'm willing to translate the interesting parts and data, so if you wanna take a look I think you can decide whether it's interesting enough, even in dutch..

The address is : http://huizen.dds.nl/~godenhal/index2.html

<S!>, hope you'll find this useful

I've found another good study, it's done by a dutch technical student and describes the exact order of battle of all dutch forces in may 1940, don't know if you wanna look at these kinds of details but it might be interesting: http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/Barracks/1247/

Doh!
