A very strange fight
« on: April 13, 2000, 11:15:00 PM »
I had something really weird happen to me when fighting Shamus south of A20.  He had at least 8k of alt on me at the start of the fight so I rolled inverted and faked a split s.  Instead I did a sharp turn diving just a little bit.  Shamus pulled up a little and followed.  Anyway we kept repeating with me evading and him trying to gain angles.  In the end we were low and Whitley, my teammate, dove in and began firing at the spit.  From my 6 view the spit was 1.5k away and retreating rapidly.  I radioed back to whitley a "thx" for clearing my 6 and said I was otw to him.  About 20 seconds later I heard pings and blew up.  I figured another spit was in the area, so I told Whitley that there are 2 spits.  He responded with a "Where are you Bloom."  I told him the other plane shot me down, to which he responded "what other plane."  Just then Shamus gave me a "good fight " on the open channel.  I asked him who was the other spit, and he said that it was just him.  Now I was really confused and asked again.  Shamus said that to him I did a very strange warp.  (I never heard any other details.)  Whitley then went down.

I alt-tabbed out and immediately ran a trace route after the second kill message.  Here it is:

As you can see, a very fine 69 ms ping average with no packet loss to the arena.  Since Whitley was fighting Shamus with, I'm assuming, no major warps, what happened?

What was strange was that I had been shot down a full 15 - 20 seconds after I had turned back to help Whitley.  I saw no warps from my end and my beacon was green at the beginning of the fight.  I guess a ghost shot me down???  Has anyone else ever seen this?   Server glitch?

(Whitley, Shamus, what did you see?  Also, if you ran a traceroute please post it.)

Hang looks at the strange little box on the desk, pulls on his lip. "So; lemme get this straight... yer sellin these little gizmo's to the bishes. And it makes a mini-time warp distortion effect?? Just by pressing this here button???"

I had a spit on my tail once at long range.  I let him close, already deciding to try for an overshoot via snap roll.  Slowly, the spit closed, 1.1k, 995, 837, 748 - break!  I rolled out and under, then took a quick look back to see the spit continuing its merry way straight ahead, almost as if oblivious to my action.  A little confused, I decided to stay on my vector until there was more speed, but I kept looking back.  Soon our diverging vectors had us at 3.5k distance and increasing when I suddenly saw the spit firing straight ahead!  Straight ahead, tracers streaking out into nothingness!  Then I started taking hits, massive hits, so many that I died outright.  The text buffer tells me that I was killed by Fariz (a Bish!!!), so I say on the general channel that he must have a real bad connect.  Fariz responds almost instantly, apologizing profusely, saying that he had wondered why I didn't evade, had fired at me, then saw a massive warp where I was very far away and at 3o'clock, then watched me explode.  Fariz realized that he had warped badly (he lives in Armenia), and was even offering to come to the nearest Knight field so that I could shoot him down, drone-style.  Hehe, such chivalry would have made my acceptance so unbecoming that I had no choice but to decline

Bloom25,

Last week I flew a sorty, got shot down, then took off and was climbing out in a CLEAR quadrant when I got pinged and lost my engine.  I bailed and asked the guy who got credit how he did that.  He said he was shooting at a "Pony in a spin".  When I got shot down in the first sorty, I wound up in a spin.  I think the "ghost plane" syndrome is back.  Could this have been what got you?

buhdman, out

Maybe buhdman, maybe.  I'm wondering what would have happened if the spit would have been shot down before I heard the pings.  The kill would have been awarded to nobody.

Nah, the bishes are all just cheaters, admit it!    (Ok, ok, maybe not.)

I too have seen this happen. Sometimes 20-40 seconds after an engagement damage hits my plane, or I see a plane seemingly extending right ahead hit him, and he warps and explodes miles away.
It's wierd but it happens.

It was a strange sight at the end of the fight bloom. Everything looked normal until the point that we were right on the deck. My fe showed a few hits on you and then you warped to my 3:00 about 1.2 away. I turned and closed and you were hanging vert in mid air nose high not moving at all, then you disapered, I thought that you had been discoed.

I then did a hard left to engage Whitley, checked my 6 and there you were again about 3d back. I didnt see you blow up because I was by that time fighting Whitley.

I did do a ping check and they were all under 200ms.NeoTrace does not check for packet loss or maybee I don't know how to use it well enough.

I have seen planes hanging in mid air before and have wondered what caused it, just figured it was some unknown glitch.

Had to be a router or server hicup then.  My connect (hopefully) is about the fastest you can get to the internet.  I get about 7 MB/sec download speeds at times.  (Even with the limits on speed on HTCs server, I downloaded 1.02 (full version) in about 1 minute.   )  When used my other computer on the weekend (modem) it took 22 minutes for just the upgrade.

Of course connection speed is only 1/2 the equation.  It also depends on what the servers along the way do that often determines warpiness.  (The savvis net server that I first come to in the DFW area often drops packets.)

What bothers me though is that I'm seeing 2 times the amount of warps that I'm used to seeing.  Besides the usual 3.8k or so jump, there is major warping going on when in close.  More and more people are seeing it as well.  (I pity those connecting overseas.)  I spent all of tonight driving tanks, so warps don't make that much difference when fighting other tanks.  On the other hand, it's very hard to shoot at a plane attacking your tank because they always warp right about when they get in range.  I hope the problem gets tracked down soon, as it is the ONLY thing that spoils this wonderful new version.

Agreed - this morning I had a truly useless connection, red beacons all over the place and 'No response from UDP' messages... figured it was my ISP, but Counter Strike servers are giving me a better ping than normal, and no packet loss...

Alternative route seems even worse. It's probably just a bad week again.

I kinda think yah nailed it Bloom.. a hiccup in connectivity. I see a few of these; but very few. None yet this rev for me.. I'm connectected with a regular 56k phone modem. I'm bettin that in AH conncect speed is of less import than connect reliability.
