you weren't here for the second frame of the very 1 st tod.

I was co out of 24 guys to defend 200 miles of nw europe 9 showed up.

it was over in 30 minutes. However our attack missions succedeed to final score was bad...........

Drill you guys are a class act.

Why do you think I became a CM? That way I would not have to be a Frame C.O. and look like the idiot when I designed any plans.

Really though, timing was everything. Had the Mongrels stayed north 10 more minutes or escorted MAG 33 North a bit more your guys would have sunk most or all of Task Group 49. I "know" how deadly your group is with torps. It would have been a disaster!

It was a tough one Drill. On the bright side, I doubt the real IJN commanders would have ever even attempted to launch in conditions you were forced with. Our group had to fly outnumbered and under clouds looking for the Allied fleet and got our tails handed to us (well, we took some F4's and F6's with us). Hopefully the weather next week is a tad more realistic and we can try to get some advatage over the Yankee Pig Dog hoardes

No complaints here (really.) But, what could we expect launching TBMs into a numerically superior force who KNEW our general location?

I enjoyed this frame (all two minutes of it) of the current TOD and I will enjoy future frames. However, I see no point in having realistic re-enactments if the point is for one side to pound another.

Drill's plans were fine. What wasn't fine was having 60 F6Fs in the general area of our attack.

Why not plan events so the sides/options are more evenly balanced? It may not be realistic, but it would sure be more fun.

For example, why didn't the CMs let us fly Zeke's with bombs and dive bomb the CVs? Or hell, even TBMs with bombs. Anything but freaking torpedos.

Seriously, you ran into a mess of hellcats out of bad luck. When we were at the cruiser fleet, the carrier fleet was completely uncovered.

When I made the fleet positions up the previous weekend, there were no clouds in that area. had the carriers been attacked by the "Jills" and the cruisers by the "Bettys" it would have been a lot different.

We're all going to get on the wrong end of the whoop bellybutton stick sometimes. Frame 3 of the big show, I lead a flight of 4 mongrels on an advance sweep and instead of finding a small group of Luftwaffe protecting A20, we find a HUGE attack force and a swarm of 109s. We got 2 of 'em, but we got slaughtered. In the end, I counted 6 109's that were after me. Frame 2 of the Russian one, we hit our target and come back for CAP. about 20 190s show up while we're refueling, the other squad that was up was overwhelmed. We get up but can't get away to get any altitude. We get slaughtered. There have been frames where we've hit the target and made it back to base with not one enemy pilot getting a shot on us. From my experience, those are nowhere near as fun as being a lamb for the slaughter.

Well... There were at most only about 30 F6Fs total to begin with, and only about 12 - 15 of them were defending our fleet, broken into two groups, while the others were searching for your fleet... so I'm guessing you probably ran into a few of them, but not 60.

Our TBMs were only allowed torpedos as well, though we were allowed bombs on our fighters. Did they say you couldn't use fighter-bombers? It seems your Ki-61s must've had bombs, because they hit A4 pretty hard.

The teams were split 50-50. If there was a difference in numbers, it is because we had a better turnout - and we, and the CMs, can't be faulted for that. I actually never looked at the numbers when we started, and when I finally did, it was 54 - 4, so I don't know if the teams were numerically that different or not.

there was a stipulation for them to use at least one flight of torpedo bombers. The AK's were assigned that flight. (edit: I thought I mentioned in the orders that one flight of TBMs should be used for the USN as well. If I didn't, then I apologize, it was my full intention that torpedoes be used on at least one flight by each side. ugh, apparently I didn't. I guess anything that could go wrong absolutely DID go wrong. hmm, I said "should" on one order and "will" on the other...

Zekes with bombs are coming up in frame 3... or maybe we should say Zekes AS bombs...

They might have confused the F6F with our F4U's, Mongrels and MAG-33 launched and headed the same IP when we came across the first wave of enemy planes (zero's) and we had about 25-30 total friendlies in relatively the same area. The second wave of N1K's prior to our release is what put the "hurt" on us, only 3 heavy F4U's got thru to sink only 1 of 3 cruisers, as the rest had to either drop ord and engage or got shot down.

This is what I got:

You can bomb both fleets (Hogs and Kitties) if you desire, tho for the sake of fun, I recommend using at least one TBM squad. You have 8 squads to assign. If you want to ask a large squad (like the Nightmares) to provide their own escort (they take a TBM flight to attack and a Hellcat to ecsort their TBMs) feel free to do so.

I asked that both of our large carrier squads consider taking TBMs along - though I didn't order them to, as the instructions I got didn't specify it. As far as I know, at least one of them, and possibly both of them, did include a flight TBMs in their strikes, or were intending to in emails I received before the event.

Depends on what you mean by a flight. Nightmares didn't get as strong a turnout as I had hoped for .. we only got 18 pilots out of of max of 24 turning out.

So instead of cutting back on our escorts of Hellcats we cut back on the TBMs. We fielded 16 Hellcats and 2 TBMs. We actually had planned for 6 TBMs and 16 Hellcats but we had some last minute things that they came up that side lined 4 pilots.
And since the TBM use was optional I decided to gamble on the Hellcats being able to punch through the enemy fighter CAP (lucky for us there was none) and clean it up and then let the 2 TBMs get in and hit a CV.

As it worked out we did not run into any fightes so none of the Hellcats had to dump eggs meaning we were able to sling 32 1000 lbs bombs at the IJN ships plus 2 Torps.
