Sorry guys, I dont like ANY American sports, they're all too wierd to be fun. It's strange that you had to take all other sports in the world and change them. Why is that? Weren't you're forefathers happy with rugby, or cricket? Where the hell did basketball come from?

I'm not knocking your sports, they're just a bit too strange for me.

Thanks for the AFL plug midnight, we do indeed have the best football in the world. Its not girly soccer and the players dont wear helmets and body armour. :)

Hmmm... Basketball was first played 1,700 years ago. Naismith looks rather well-preserved. :)

I don't think either the NBA or the NCAA plays "Mayan rules".

;)

Exactly my point. No one does.

Roughly on topic... there's a remake of movie, "The Longest Yard" in the works. It's a British Film... the game is soccer. Working title is "Mean Machine."

get your own thread, you basketball freaks!    (hehe, and I'll be there with my picks!)

AFL is pretty spiffy, too.  I enjoy watching it.  Truth is I enjoy a lot of different sports.  The World Cup is just the best tho.  :)

So you are admitting that you have no idea whether or not the Mayan game has any similarity to Naismith's invention other than the fact that it was apparently played with some type of ball?

OK, we both agree.  :D

Sorry, Nifty, I'm out now.

Can't forget the hoops and the court.

Biggest difference is that the NBA losers get to live. :)

For a decent contact sport played by men, not padded girlies, nothing beats Rugby (preferably Union). What's more England are actually decent at it (unlike cricket). :)

Nifty - Seaman is THE goalie. No two ways about it. What's more, he comes from my home town. Friedel is just a Liverpool reject. :D

We also have a guy called Richard Wright. Look out for him in the next couple of years.

I actually would like the US to do well. But Poland are quality on their day. But like you say, every dog has its day. Any chance England could meet the US in the second round? I'm pretty sure not, the way the groups are arranged.

There is one truely American team game that was invented here and is currently an Olympic sport......not baseball or basketball. Any guesses?

My guess is ice hockey but i'm also guessing that i'm wrong. Its probably something dumb like horse jumping.

Thanks for the basketball info to those who provided it.

To the hockey fan, it's a boring sport to watch but we're gonna win it anyway.

Lastly, if you think rugby is a real mans sport, watch some AFL footy from 15-20 years ago, it was brutal. Now days its a bit toned down, which is a shame.
