I want to shot someone down!

Hi, I am a beginner at HTC, but I have been trying to get this to work (first I had graphics cards problems, then after that I found out you play this with a stick instead of a mouse) But I still haven't got my KILL yet, I know this reflects practice and skill, but are there any tactics, or manuevers specific to this game that will help me shoot someone down. thanks

Face it, you're new at this, and it's a tough game.

So, to make the most of your time, and to see some success, try the fighter bomber role.

You'll get good gunnery practise on your straffing runs (BTW, dive bombing and rockets are hard to do properly), you'll be scoring points, and you'll be in the right place at the right time to catch 'em taking off :)

Which beats spending ten or fifteen minutes climbing if your fight only last 30 seconds.

Once you've dropped your ordinance, then you go hunting happy in the knowledge you scored some points, contributed to the cause and you're on your way to be a killer :-)

Telling a newbie to focus on ground targets is criminal! lol.   Hmm lets throw the guppy in the shark pool shall we?!

Search the web for articles on ACM,

But the best advice I could give is:

#1.  Keep a good attitude.  View every death as a learning experience.  Ask yourself what you did wrong and ...

#2.  What did he do?  Film it if you have to.  Copy it!  Fly his plane, fly his style.  Aces rarely tell you their secrets, but they can't resist showing you.

I was basically in the same position as you not too long ago and what I did, and what I recommend you to do is go to:

http://www.simhq.com/simhq3/sims/air_combat/RAFgun/

http://www.simhq.com/simhq3/sims/air_combat/gunsights/

http://www.simhq.com/simhq3/sims/air_combat/guns1/guns1.shtml

http://www.simhq.com/simhq3/sims/air_combat/guns2/guns2.shtml

http://www.simhq.com/simhq3/sims/air_combat/guns3/guns3.shtml

and read any other article that Andy Bush has written on Basic Flight Manuvers and Air-to-Air Gunnery.

After reading these articles, come back to AH and practice the techniques in the "Offline" mode. Once you feel comfortable, jump into the Main Arena try it there.

You will definately get shot down more times than you would like, but just keep practicing and it will start to happen for you. Also, you might want to take a look at a thread that I started in this same forum ... "Gunsights ... How to Read Them?".

ACM ACM ACM

Bah....

IMO the worst thing a newbie can learn first is ACM.

Learn BFM, how to shoot and most importantly learn the use of the AH view system.

Practice off-line.  Fly around a drone target or a ground target, manipulate your view system and always keep the target in view.

You must get to a point where changing views really becomes second nature.  No more thought than turning your head and checking out a women with a nice figure.

Now practice shooting at those targets.  Turn on zoom to shoot, turn it off after you shoot.  Always keep you target in view.

What does this get you?

1)  The ability to hit what you shoot at, a big plus.

2) The ability to see what is around you, a really big plus.

Learn ACM if you want, but most important thing in the AH arena is SA (Situational Awareness) and being able to hit a target.

NetAces.org is a good place to start.  A definite must see site for the newbie to this game.

I know what you mean, but I still think it's the right advice :)

We all start this thinking we're going to be Yeager or Rall, and it can be dispiriting dying constantly for no tangible gain.

Jabo will teach the basic skills, while making each sortie worthwhile. There's plenty of time to get that wierd ACM stuff under your belt, the first and foremost thing is Fun!, and blowing stuff up is always good for that :)

Mean while, Jabo and straffing teaches basic control, gunnery and SA. What more can you ask from a basic program?

Oh the killin people problem, for myself i have been here 3 months and i have gotten really good, but thats not the point i have some of the best trainers in this game, from P51 flyers to hybrids such as AkNimitz :)   they told me many things but they were just theories, but some of the advice i give u would be to cherry pick people, or to catch them off guard and bounce em with speed, (not like it do this :) )  remeber asking people and being nice to them gets u a long way, unless they piss u off.  But i have alos surfed on the net many time lookin for site that will HOPEFULLY teach me somethin, so i have found some... heres what ive been lookin at good luck bud.

I'm new here too, but did a lot in AW, and the best thing a new player can really do is simply get in a lot of fights, watch others fight, take films, and FORGET about points til you can consistently kill once in a six position.   Practice spotting a position to attack from, then practice getting to that point(usually the 6), then learn to follow(find another pilot about your skill level and play follow the leader), and then learn to shoot well(wish we had WB's offline system).

Broke all those rules,
then started over again.
