I feel compelled to respond...I been quick to tell my feelings about new releases in the past. For ME, I've found 1.09 to be among the best. Yea, I hate the blinking map lights and I want the game to be backwards compatible in that if I don't want Aces High Voice, I can shut it off, as I did in the old days.
You mention loosing players, 1.08's Strat all but killed off the 416th RCAF, the squad I was in. 5 guys, all zapped their accounts and opted to go to their respective games (IL-2, etc). I stuck with it since HiTech said the strat would be changed and I gave it time.
I think overall, the testers (if there are any?) did ok, the list of fixes in Patch 1 seem pretty small in regards to major problems resolved. 1.08, on the other hand, was really a different story. Trees at the end of runways and other things gave me the impression that the people testing didn't try flying a Lancaster off a field. I also felt the map and map icon system took a turn for the worse. And I still do, I still can't find bases without trying to center the map, zooming in, and hunting it down. And there are other areas I've suggested improvements to (or as Rude calls them, "Whines"). Craters causing damage when a GV or Aircraft rolls over them and others. Others have chimed in as well.
So, my long beleagured point, is that if you aren't having fun or truly hate the game for what its become, either cancel the account and comeback later, or sit tight. Overall, I love this game. Yea, there are bits and pieces I dislike, but in the grand story of it all, it flies right, feels right, and for a little while, takes me away from the real world and its associated problems.
