The Good, the Bad, the Lag
« on: June 11, 2002, 11:04:41 AM »
I find great pleasure in goofing on Skernsk and Sling via the TOD volunteers and it’s time schedule, just because, but had not tried it fully until my work schedule finally made it plausible. Friday’s TOD, “The Mighty 8th”, (I think)was my full first time run.

Here’s my take on it, from a mostly MA flyer.

It’s a load of fun, and if these things were more frequent, it would make my AH subscription a NESSESSITY. Well, I will subscribe till the end out of loyalty, but for reluctant 2 week test flyers, it’s where it’s at. Worth the admission, if frequency and a few problems are addressed.

Here’s my squeakes.

It lags like the MA could never, barring a new patch release. I simply do not understand that, nor do I wish to do the math on server administration, pipeline logistics, cost, etc.
It just warped badly. The MA does 400 smooth on my end, the SEA didn’t. Why?

Fatty told me outright via voice to pull up my gear, or they would shear off on altitude launch. I did. No prob. TOD killer if you didn’t get him before beer of the week kicked in. Hmmmm.

I browsed for just what I was going into prior to joining the TOD, Exiles pages looked great, but I must have missed a lot. Are guys getting emails with a newsletter format or something more viable? I assume that from me just joining and feeling a bit miffed.

Somehow I lost a wing mid-attack on a 110. Reviewed the film, no friendly fire. I limped off and a 110 found me at least. Don't get it.

The Goods.

It’s what I want (minus the lag) 3-4 times a week. It’s just a riot. Period.

The results are EXCELLENT. You see what everyone did. A programming feat to "log in and play" tards like me. I'm very impressed.

Glad you enjoyed part of it. I have to tell you as far as the TOD's have gone that frame was the absolute worst as far as lag. I know quite a few had problems with it. Shame you picked that one to try out the TOD.

Other items…

1.   The player limit is quite a bit less than the MA and that is part of the problem. 260 compaired to 550 in the MA. HTC is well aware of this limitation and have been working on a solution to solve this problem. This solution costs a lot of $ and in the process of the upgrade some issues have come up with the bussiness they have to deal with. Consenquently the whole procedure has taken much longer than expected.

2.   There is still a 32 plane limit and our groups need to be kept smaller due to this problem.

3.   Exile and (and masons art work) have put up some great pages. Just yesterday HTC started pulling it over to their site. Pyro told me after 1.10 is out they will focus on that.

4.   Each TOD has 3 frames. Each frame we have an Allied and Axis C.O. These Frame C.O.'s are e-mailed "objectives" for their frame. They in turn send out orders to all the C.O.'s on their side, who in turn send it to their respective squad.

5.   Jordi has an events e-mail list if you would like to get on it. It does not focus on just the TOD's but all our events.

To be added to the AH Special Events E -Mail List do one of the following.
1. Send an Email to AHSpecialEvent-subscribe@topica.com
2. Go to the web site and register -
http://www.topica.com/lists/AHSpecialEvent

6.   3 or 4 times a week! Well, right now we have a Friday TOD and a Sunday TOD. :) Lots of work behind the sceens, so I can't see having the man power to host 3 or 4 TOD's a week. ;) We will be starting some new events on Saturday sometime soon. Hope those will be tasty to some.

1-5, thank you for the timely response. (Registered, appreciate the e-mail link)

6. Suit up them volunteers. It’s feasible.

Your CO has detailed orders Creamer, you should speak to him about being more responsible in the distribution and explaination of those orders.  It sounds like the one you have sucks.

3-4 times a week might be workable in the future, but we are just now getting to the our max numbers for a friday night event. Even if we had the admin support, I'm not sure the player base would be there yet. It would make sense to me to keep us at 2 TODs until we start getting closer to the 260 number. Then consider opening up another. Just my opinion.
