not a great fan of the p51... but i was at an airshow the other day and the p51 sounded different than any other prop WWII plane there..it was kind of a hum with a high pitch whine behind it..
not a meaty sound like the spit 9, much quieter.

i wish i had had my video cam with me..

My guess to that would be some sort of modification to the engine or turbo/super charger...cant remember which it has....but a owner change because a lack of parts is most likely why it sounds different

The 51 engine has open exhaust straight from the cylinder and uses a supercharger instead of a turbocharger. It would sound the same either with or without the supercharger. One thing I did find interesting about the Merlin used in the 51 though was that it had 4 valves per cylinder. The exhaust stacks are really short and they cover both exhaust outlets  per cylinder and taper to a smaller opening. They are about 8 inches long overall if memory serves me correctly.
