Goon Etiquette...Or my Entry for Whine of the Week
« on: December 23, 2001, 07:53:00 PM »
Get those sweatly little palms ready, Rude, here is comes.

Last night was an all time low for me in Aces High. Not being a fighter jock (due to lack of skill, not by choice) I support my country by flying bombers, and troop/supply drops.

Alright fellas, being a goonie is not a glamourous job. We all know that. But common courtesy still applies. If a goonie asks the status of a town, please answer, if at all possible.

I flew an extended mission last night, after diverting from a captured field. I asked for town conditions 5 times! Not a single pilot acknoledged my request, even when I called out my 5 mi position.

Also, when asked if any other goons were rolling to said field....Silence.

5 Miles out, I decide to make a run, town up or down, capped or not.

I get the town in sight, only to see the alert that the field had been captured by our country.

I logged off in disgust.

I would love to know who was so busy flying a goon, to not call in, saying he had the job covered. That's an hour of my life, wasted (not that it would'nt have been wasted had I captured the field.)

Don't get me wrong. I'm glad we got the field, but geez, tell me I'm wasting my time, or I'm running back-up.

A little cooperation, please.

Here endeth the whine.

Rude, do your worst.

Been there done that... remember though that at peaks times the text buffer is constantly rolling through with kill messages and not many squelch channel 6 (I do for that very reason though) so it is very easy to miss requests in the message bar.  Not much you can do except re-up and try to be first in with the goon at the next field.  At the very least you were part of the team that got the capture, better than flying the goon for an hour and getting shot down for your trouble.

Goon flying is a thankless job and I don't do it very often (fighter jock almost exclusively) so a big <S> to people such as yourself Muck who take the time to do it.

Please keep it up.  Goodness knows we need some goon fliers around who don't come in at 50ft and wonder why all their drunks go splat.  Of course, if you're not a rook atm feel free to do just that.  ;)

Yup....been there, done that.

If you goon, you take your life into your own hands.  I can't tell you how many evenings I psent just resupplying bases over and over again because our side wouldn't defend it.  I also recall being told "Its down" only to fly into a hornet's nest.

Same with buffing.

Recall the old addage, "No good deed goes unpunished"

Goon rules:

1. If you take off in a good, you're already dead.  anything else that happens is a bonus.

2. If someone yells "Town is flat, Acks down, No fighters, send in the Goon", do not take a goon.  Nine times out of ten, those conditions will not prevail by the time you get there.

3. If you are in a goon, do not advertise on channel 2.  If you must, use channel 3.  We all have friends on all sides.  You never know when somebody will help a buddy out by informing them of your positoin.

4. If you are in a goon, chances are someone else is too.  If someone else captures the field, all goon drivers win.

5. If you want to fly a goon, try to coordinate your actions with a group that is about to attack a field.  Your odds are much better when you're part of a planned assault.  If you do it enough, you may learn the tac channels of some of the more ubiquitous squads.

6. If you are in a goon, and nobody gives you information about the status of a field, it could be because nobody's over the field; or it could be they're too busy vulching, and would rather you not ruin their fun.  In any case, info is nice, but don't count on it.  You're better off taking those tac channels you learned and asking there.  You might get more of a response if they think you're a squaddie or "fellow traveler".

Muck I feel you pain...

Tonight I threw no less than 6 M3's (and 1 C47) at A43. Each time as I approached I asked is the town flat No one replied. 4 times I got to the town and sat taking out fighters waiting for someone to kill the remaining buildings and got shot to hell. Finally on the 6th run It all went perfect. I got 2 fighters on the way in asked for a status, Got an affernmative so delivered the drunks 16.76 perkies.  :D Made the whole night worthwhile. I've been gooning since V0.37 and I am still amazed at how little protection us goon drivers get. I rarely goon at all now unless I know there is a mission to take the field.

It would help if town status were included in the strat section of the clipboard. Bomber pilots can already check hanger, fuel, ammo, radar, and troop status, so this would be consistent.

And one more thing regarding goon etiquette: when a goon in on the way, make sure to tell him to hurry up at least once every 30 seconds. We really like that   :)

Sorry Muck....

You're not whinin :)

Give it some time...many here will get to know you and communicate effectively. The sim has a large influx of newer players who get caught up in what they are doing and sometimes ignore requests such as the one you made.

Try and ask of the more veteran players the questions which arise while online...they will almost always help you in any way they can.

Merry Christmas!
