Seen the WWII Guncamera Footage Video?
« on: September 07, 2000, 02:13:00 PM »
Pyro posted the link back so that folks could order the gun camera video available from Amazon.com.

I got mine last night.

Seems B-17s and B-24s stood up pretty well against multiple 20MM hits.  The footage of one B-17 taking about 30 hits from I guess 20MM is AMAZING.  You can watch as the shells explode in and on the plane.  You can tell that the Tail and Belly gunners are incapatated cause the guns are hanging and this guy is pretty safe loitering on the 6 and pounding away.

Also you can easily see just how much 6 or 8 .50s do to a plane.  Also guys strafeing so low they must have cut furrows in the ground.

I pick out at least 2 Machis, one of them folds practically in half.

Anyhow I really reccomend it.  ALso the U.S. guys appear to be hitting effectively with the .50 Cals from what appears to me to be more than 400 yards pretty regularly.

Watching this gave me a lot more appreciation of the gunnery model in AH.

HT/Pyro any chance that the sprites can be changeds to they more accurately effect what you see in that video.  Big Bright flashes when the cannon impact, and multiple smaller sprites with the .50 cal.  The Sprites you have now are about 1/3rd too small for 20mm and about 4x to big for .50.

Also you can see plane buck and shake when they are hit by the various ordinance.  Being hit for 1 or 2 seconds by 8 barrels of .50 must have made them need to change their underware.

Hey downtown,
You have rekindled my interest, Just found the trailer for this on my HD, and after another look I think I will order it as well.

Don't know if the trailer is still available on Amazon, If it is I can thoroughly recommend a look, I still shudder when I see the last clip of the B17 from the ME110. That tail gunner must have been killed in the 1st few seconds  .

If the trailer isn't available anymore I can email it to anyonne interested (3+mb).

The opening footage of the B17 taking hits makes me believe those are 30mm strikes.  One strike every two seconds for about eight seconds at a range of about 150-200 yrds
with impunity (my guess is the tail gunner was either dead, injured, leaving or gone).

The attacker broke off with the B17 maintaining level flight.

Great video.  A *must have* for sure.

It is from Avion Park and it's call "Gun Camera Footage of World War Two."

I think that they did slow motion for much of the LW strikes.  At one point it appears that the attacking pilot (you see a lot of footage of this B-17 under attack) apparently is trying to get the waist gunners.  There are several stikes on the side midway up the 17.  I believe a couple shells explode inside the B-17 cause you can see light flashes through some of the holes already made by the cannon.

I am speculating but I believe we see at least 3 passes being made at this B-17.  I am going on the position that the Tail and Ball guns are pointing.  The First attack you see some traces come from the Tail and ball guns, and there are 10 or 15 horrific blinding flashes on the rear of the B-17.  You don't see any more traces from the Buff after this.

I think he then closed in and went for the side gunners, and that is what I describe above.

Last pass I think he concentrates on the Right wing, right at the engines, and at one point you see the wheel of the B-17 fall away.

He definetly concentrates his fire on #1 for about 1 second, and then moves on to #3 for an equal amount of time.  I think he broke off cause so much fuel or smoke was comming from this buff at this time.

I would say that this B-17 from my review of the video took from 50 to 75 hits of 20MM.

I say 15 to kill the tail and ball turret.  He moved in put 30 to 45 along the waist, and then moved onto 10 to 15 in the #1 and #3 engines.

Watching some of the footage I would recoil as pieces of the planes came back toward the attacking aircraft.

I think this video shows that (and I don't know why) Japanese aircraft did burn pretty easy.

Also lots of great strafing passes at ships, trains, vehicles, factories, power lines, etc.. etc..

P.S. Good stuff of P-40 waxing 109's over North Africa.

I think that "Palm Sunday Masacare" was so good for the P-40s cause the 109 had to protect the JU-52s.
