Music on the net
« on: December 02, 2002, 08:42:52 AM »
Now that I've got a CD burner (welcome to the 21st century Rip! ) I'm wondering the following:

Whats the best pay sites for downloading music?

Whats the best free sites (if any) for downloading music?

I enjoy all music except Rap/Hip hop.

Advanced thanks!

download kazaa, its a file sharing program.  Has all the newest music and stuff.  Beware though, all file sharing programs try to install spy-ware on your p.c.  But hey, free tunes.

In an interesting study, it was found runners can run 6% longer while listening to music than when not.

Better yet, get Kazaa Lite. It does the same thing without all of the crap they load on the full up version.

Rip, Kazza is ok.   some annoying popups everyonce and awhile.
Loads of music to download just have to be careful what you get.
Mislabled songs and songs with ends cutoff are problems for me.
I've downloaded about 600 songs this month,  about 100 or  more are mislabled with the wrong artist or song names incorrect.
(I have 5 Los Lobos songs with 5 different names and they are the same song and 3 of them are attributed to someone other than Los Lobos)
Another 15 or so have the ends of the song missing, cutoff, or sound quality is poor.  But its free so I complain quietly to myself.

The plus side is I now have a hugh selection of The Ventures and Chet Atkins.

You are downloading music from other users pc's,  and they will also download from you once you start.

I would gladly pay 10 or 15 bucks a month to access and download cd quality music without errors and correct labeling though.

And one other note.   If you run Kazza then decide to log on and play AH,  reboot your system.   I ran Kazza then quit and logged on and showed pings of 600- 800.  Rebooted and had pings of 40-60.

Yes,  Rip, Use Kazza Lite,  but beware of message saying there is an upgrade.   I'm still using Kazza Lite and its ok,  My wife clicked on the upgrade and now she gets the annoying ads that not only popup but talk to you also.

Also check your options in setup for bandwidth,  there is a setting for how much bandwidth for users to download from you,  default is unlimited, which means they will suck you dry.

definitely use usenet.  Buy yourself a good newsreader that can handle y-encoded files, and groups like files together.  NewsRover is a decent one.  From there, you can either use your ISP's newsgroup provider, or subscribe to a premium one.  The premium ones will have longer histories, and will be a better overall experience.

WinMX - without a doubt.   Great features, popular, easy to use, lots of music.

Kazaa's popups are at best annoying and its spyware reputation (well earned, I might add) leave many users wary about what is going on "behind the scenes."

That's why everyone on here has been saying KAZAA LITE!!!!!!!!!! its a hacked version stripped of the spyware, works just the same, but no annoying pop ups.  If you know how to use MIRC, well you can get anything from movies to games, and in particular New Release CD's weeks if not months in advance from there "actual" release date.  Case in point, my g/f wanted the new mariah carey CD, got it 3 weeks before it was to hit the shelves.

Don't download all those newbie programs.. go right to the source. Better transfer rates, better bit rate, complete songs, dedicated servers, advanced and new release.
