Question about ATI 9700 Pro
« on: January 01, 2003, 01:26:32 PM »
I bought this card about a week or so ago. It seems to work well in most areas. I do however get major frame drops when there's alot of smoke at a field or a whole lot of aircraft (furball).

I probably average around 60-75 fps normally and it will drop to 10-20 fps in these situations.

My system is a bit outdated but I would think it'd run average close to 100 fps in AH and drop to maybe 40ish in these situations. My previous card was a GeForce 2 mx400 64mb and my FRs were barely lower.

Skuzzy or anyone have any advice? Is there a setting I could change somewhere that would reduce the FR drop in smokey areas without reducing the overall quality?

System specs:

PIII 1.0 GIG/133 FSB
768 PC 133 SDRAM
40 GIG WD HD 7200
Win2K Pro
ATI 9700 PRO
SB LIVE 5.1
CH STICK / PEDALS / THROTTLE (ALL USB)

At work and can't remember the Driver #s for the various cards but they are optimal from what I've read on these boards. DX 8.1 and have the sound boost set to 3/4.

Appreciate any help given. Just seems this system should run AH faster to me but I don't know???

I agree with Minus.  I think you're bumping into a CPU limitation as opposed a video card limitation.

make sure you download the latest drivers at ATI.com. downloading new drivers may help boost FPS in AH.

i runing AMD XP 2200  13 micron, + 1 GO of 333 DDR RAM +kt 333 ARU

i sugest to any 1 the 13 micron AMD !! it heat much much les like old XP AMD and the L1 bridge is uncut !!!!

that mean , if you get a cheap XP1700 amd 13micr you can set multiplier in bios to run it like XP 2000

without any expensive coling solution

the drivers are inportant , using CATALIST 3.0 +DX 9

the Best thing on ATI9700 PRO is  when i can push all antialiasing , multitexturing ,anisotropic filtering to MAX and  without real efect on frame rate !!!!!

and at last it was necesery to upgrade my power suply,  now using Antec 550 w

Two things BNM

1)  The 9700Pro does not perform all that great unless you crank up the resolution and other features it supports.

2)  Considering it is takin a 2.8GHz and higher CPU speeds to realize the cards potential, I have to agrre with others, you are very CPU limited.  Not a bad thing.  Just know you can easily upgrade your CPU and keep this card around for quite a while.

9700 pro with 2.8ghz and 512 mb pdram..
I don't get any FPS drops. period.
at the highest reso, 32 bit, all options on.
it never slows down...doesn't matter what's on the screen.
