I really don'tunderstand how people can say that the Cougar's springs are too strong - if anything, I find them on the weak side. Now I'm very much a wimp physically - and have a dodgy right shoulder to boot - so is it simply the amount of leverage that I can apply (I'm 6 foot 3") with my long arms and large hands?

Uhu so your happy with strong springs and apparently have a hit rate of 4.5 %.

On the other hand i was unhappy with the springs and freely admit to them being ridiculously strong and detrimental to fine control at or near,

1, the centre position.
2,  traversing across the diagonals.

Now I dont feel any less of a man for admitting that ;)

When i first got my cougar my hit rate dropped to something abysmal like 7 %.

Having made a few mods to spring tension and setup of the cougar i currently have a 13.8 % hit rate.

Works for me.

I'm hardly built like Popeye but I also don't find the springs too stiff you get used to them after a few hours.

So? I'm not a good shot. And very many of my misses are in vehicles and ack. I'm getting better. I had an even worse hit rate with my Saitek. It's not the tool; it's the user.

No problem with the spring feel here.

Now I am not a great shot by any stretch but here is my hit % for this tour so far. I also don't ever come close to the pasty skin award mark either. But being 6'4" 265 I like having a heavy feel to the stick. Other stuff just seems light in comparison

First tour with Cougar was Tour 28:
Fighter: 5.5% (1194) I had 3:29 hours in game.

Cougar Hit % after close to 1 years usage:
Tour 38:
Fighter: 14.611 % (187)

Tour 37:
Fighter: 7.391 % (1463)
Attack:  9.251 % (1799) vs. Objects 58.378 % (2180)
Vehicle: 6.03 % (2000)

Tour 36:
Fighter:  5.062 % (1898)
Attack: 11.936 % (1520) vs. Objects 100.494 % (1776)
Vehicle:  15.453 % (807)

F-16 FLCS/TQS usage Tours - Tour 14 till Tour 25 (before that I was under another nick I have forgotten I also did not fly from Tour 26:
Tour 25:
Fighter: 4.59 % (1192)
Attack:  2.11 % (1558)

Tour 24:
Fighter: 5.34 % (1077)
Vehicle: 1.06 % (2306)

Tour 23:
Fighter: 8.24 % (350)
Attack:  35.88 % (265)
Vehicle: 5.1 % (1268)

Tour 22:
Fighter: 9.56 % (177)
Attack:  28.94 % (402)
Vehicle: 6.45 % (835)

Lol we have had posts of this nature before :)

But if you think you have good control of your cougar start the foxys windows joystick analyser and try and draw a circle one handed.

You may be surprised how poor the cougars spring design is when it comes to fine control.

Anybody can yank and bang the cougar around all day long, its getting the fine control at the break point near centre and whilst traversing across the diagonals (going from 1 spring to the other) where the problem is.

But its only my opinion, if your happy ignore me.

The springs are not the problem as I have said both here and over at CougarWorld. For me I still like the heavier feel of the springs but I do not like the way you have flat areas around with the gimbals. I can not afford Evenstrain's mod and I doubt that I can afford any other mod right now with a new baby otw into the house. But that is beside the point.

I have gotten to the point where I don't take many shots that I could because with the flat areas caused by the gimbals longer range shots are practically an impossibility unless you are shooting down bombers. As a result I think my "flying" has gotten better because I am sticking to the bandit alot more and waiting on my shot to bring them down. Also I think I am getting more assists this way because I don't lay down on the trigger  for very long.

You're right though this argument has been played out many, many times here and other forums. Its all about personal preference and for me I like 'em. If I could go to a stiffer spring and better gimbals.

I can get my fighter hit rate to 12-13% with my cougar. But that is more a testiment to not taking shots then to my cougar itself.
The fine control arround the middle with the stock cougar is just too iffy. You really see it in Il2 where hit location is way more signifigant the AH.  Alot of shots just have to be passed by.
I gave it a year...I love the thing but it is less then what I hoped for. Not in spring strength but in fine control.
So the mod I am getting allows you to fine tune the spring resistance. And it makes control around the center very fine...
