Well here's my attempt to be the first Luftwhiner about Sunday's event 3-24-03.

First off, when did frames jump 3 years in time. I recall the first frame pitting 109E and 110C, Ju87 and Ju88 against Hurri Mk. I and Spit Mk. I and Bostons against each other. Next frame has this plane set?

The Axis had plane restrictions forcing a good deal of us into 110Cs. whole outmatched against any allied plane of the set. Then throw in no alt restriction for allies so when we engage them they are at 30k. Now add the fact this was supposed to be a night fight, but by the time the allies reached their destanation, the sun was full up.

I hope this was one gigantic misunderstanding.

You're right Flossy. My mistake. So where was the 110G? Or the 190A8? Seems the Allies went ahead 3 years, but the Axis didn't.
Oh wait, we got the token 109G-6s. How nice.

I had no problems with the time jump, thought it was an interesting idea.  Breaks with the TOD tradition a bit, but I'm all for trying/flying something new.

JB's right, however, that something seemed to get cocked up as far as the dusk/dawn thing was concerned.  I also wasn't that happy about the lack of alt restrictions (historically, most bomber raids in 1943 were not flying anywhere near as high as the cons I saw on Sunday!).  And some of the plane restrictions on the Luftwaffe seemed a little punitive (no formations for the tiny number of 88s we did have, for example; I mean, jeez, if you are going to put them up against 50cal and cannon wielding interceptors, give them a chance!).

It was a great idea, and I had a lot of fun, but there does seem to be stuff that could be done better next time, I think.

I wasn't there, and didn't see the orders for the frame, so I don't know what was supposed to happen with the "dusk/dawn thing".  I can only apologise if it didn't work out as anticipated.

The idea for three distinct frames has been done before in TOD on plenty of occasions.

Historically the 110C4 was not capable of attacking single seat fighters and quite rightly would be eaten alive in those situations.

All you had to do was use the right tactics.

As for the limited Ju-88 force, this again was about the limit of the Germans capability at this time of the war. Historically they would have gone in singly. You will also notice that I gave the bomber pilots and extra life in leiu of there obvious fate.

190A8 was not available till Feb 44. And the 110G we have is a ground attack variant.

I thought I was being very generous allowing so many heavily armed 110, and the 190a5 was only just in service.

So you cannot please all the people all the time.

Hmm, when you say better I take it you mean less historically correct?

Funny, I got it in the neck when I originally posted this SquadOps for having single seat fighters in it at all!

If u saw high cons then it was not the allied bomber force!

All Lancs flew at 15k alt the entire frame.

That's exactly what I mean!  Let the Wookie win!  :D

BTW, it was news to me that bomber pilots got an extra life.  Tjay and I both bit the wax tadpole early in the frame, asked the rest of the squad whether or not it was a single life event, they said it was, so I took my 2 p51 kills and left.

My squad lied to me!  They just wanted to get Tjay and I out of the way so there would be more kills for them!

On thinking about it the 88 restriction did make sense, by the way.  It just wasn't obvious to me at the time what you were going for.

To make sure there is no mistake.  Allied bombers did entire attack run at 15,000 as these were the lead bomber pilots orders.  After bombs were released bombers did climb an additional 5,000 feet to level at 20,000.  We continued at the altitude for perhaps 2 sectors at which time we began a gentle dive for home.

From my point of view the Lancasters did in fact fly historically.  I do not know what bombers you saw, but they were not allied Lancasters.  I think it is better for the whole event experience if when you make accusations you do at least make true accusations and not guesses.
