Gaming History of intrest.....
« on: July 11, 2003, 03:09:06 AM »
I just found somthing that may be of intrest to the CT.  Long ago circa 1977, my friends and I played an Air to Air combat game called Mustangs amd Messershmits.  The game system was pre Computer and used minitures mounted on a pivoting clip attached to a rod mounted on a wheeled base, which was calabrated for forward movement and and turn radii.
The game was played in turns of 5 seconds each which were further subdivided in to 3 impulses of 1.667 sec.  Aircraft  movement was mesured in rolls of the wheel and movement of the model on the clip up and down the stick, aicraft orientation was shown by placing the model in the position it occupied at the end of its move ie. rolled and diving, inverted and climbing ect.  Complex rules of movement existed to determen who had to move first .
The largest game I ever played in was at Origens 87 where we used a Ball room as a map and had approx 35 players we played all morning and were managing to get about one turn an Hour accomplished..........

The system still works and is still fun but it involves crawling around on the floor, and I dont bend as well as I used to.

Another feature  is the scenario generator, the war years are divided up into periods or areas, with each area subdivided into sub periods.  Each sub period has a list of the aircraft found in the area broken down into a percetage chance of an aircrafts chance of being used.  Mission types are also listed in this manner.   We would use the genarator to select aicraft and situations that were likely to happen and ussaly close to being balenced.

    For example:
Period 1 is called the "Battle for Europe" and is broken down into 5 sub periods, Battle for Poland, Invasion West, Battle for France and the low countries, Battle of Britain part 1, and Battle of britain part 2.

Battle for Poland:
Pilot mix:  50% Polish
                50% German

Missions:  30% German Close escorted Close support Raid
                         60% Attack craft
                         40% Escort
10% Polish un escorted Close support raid
All re-entering polish pilots will be in Fighter craft
45% German Close Escorted Bomber Raid
                 15% German Fighter Sweep

Aircraft:
     German Attack: 40% Hs 123
                              30% Ju 87b
                              30% Do 17z or Do 17p
    German Fighter:70% Bf 110c
                              10%Bf 109c
                              10%Bf 109e-1
                              10%Bf109e-3
Polish Attack;           PZL P.23 Karas or PZL P.37 Los
     Polish Fighter    30%PZL P.7 or Avia 534b
                              60%PZL P.11c or IK2
                              10%PZL P.24 or IK3 or Avia B.35 or
                                     Hurricane I

As you can see the the list out is detailed but easy to genarate.  I'll have the rule book at the con, and it may still be findable some where.  Failing that I can try to contact the author R. Russo for permision to copy it.

yes, I also have Avalon Hill (that's what AH used to mean to me!) Airforce and Dauntless here.  They have some good data in there as well.

Oh yeah, I've got those two games also.  They're in a closet in the basement, and I'd forgotten all about them.  I'll have to drag them out and look at them again.

Gunnss: Yeah, I remember M&M.  Our wargaming club at Vandenburg AFB in CA sponsored a mine-convention/tournament for all the west-coast military bases back in 1984 (or 85?), and one of the groups brough M&M.  As I had been into model building some time earlier, I was quite take with the game.  Unfortunately, I never had the time to take it up seriously.

Wow I had forgotten those days somehow. I had almost every title put out by Avlon Hill, I even subscribed to their magazine " The General". Things have come a long way from spending hours moving little card board game pieces across a cardboard map.

Hell things have come a long way since my first computer flight sim. Which was Hellcat Ace on my Atari 800 computer.  The game was on casstette drive. So I had time to go mow the front yard while the game loaded. Guess these are the good old days, except I'd love to have my eyesight, and hand eye coordination from the 80s.:D
