Another Recall
« on: September 26, 2003, 01:36:13 PM »
The gov't has ordered the recall of all those hyped up Seqways.  It turns out they are dangerous when the batteries run low.

recall

What a dumb design, using gyroscopes to keep it standing.  Just put 4 wheels on it and save all that cost, weight, complexity, and energy drain.  I guess it wouldn't look so cool, though.

I am glad they got the Segway fixed before they rolled out their stair-climbing wheelchair.  Can you imagine thousands of OAPs falling over backwards down a set of stairs because they forgot to charge up their Segway Wheelchair the night before?

My initial impression was that the Seqway was a spin-off of a project for a better wheel chair for paraplegics and amputees.  Two wheels allowed such individuals to operate in the world at the same height as normal folks, without the bulk and clumsy operation of a 4-wheel design.

I think at some point it became more of a status symbol than a useful piece of equipment.

Sharper Image electric scooters are just as fast, go just as far, can fold up and fit under a desk or in a trunk, and follow the time honored engineering principle 'K. I. S. S.'

And for about 3 to 400 dollars, they are 1/10th the price.
