Strange System Problem
« on: October 31, 2003, 04:08:54 PM »
Have been having a weird problem as of late. Anytime I open more than 3 or 4 I.E. windows (which I do pretty often) my computer will get very slow, and the windows will display with distorted graphics and text. This also happens when I open say WinMX and an I.E. window, or when I open more than any 2 or 3 programs at the same time, for that matter. This really never happened before, and I'm not sure what the problem is?

Thanks for any help!

BTW, System specs are:

900 Mhz P3
512 MB SDRAM (PC-133)
20 Gig HD
Radeon 7500 64 MB Graphics
Windows 98SE

you have something running using up resources badly .

start /run /   msconfig     and check out whats running in your startup menu....

I can open 12 - 15 seperate windows on a 1.3ghz 512 ram machine and still serf fine.

8-10 windows on my 1 ghz  256 ram no problems

Id look for some sort of trojan ect ... theres a new spybot one that just came out the other day ...

Heinkle....as a proponent and former user of 98SE let me suggest

that you upgrade to Win2K or Win2KPro.  I use Win2KPro and it

makes a world of difference in stability and performance.  98SE

which I thought was great....really can't compare to Win2K.  You

can get the OEM ver. Win2KPro on the Web.  Got mine at

Tigerdirect.com for a reasonable price...shop around, upgrading

just might solve your problems if nothing is taking up your

resources.

theres alot of scripting virous's going around also , just opening a browser with active scripting ,active x , controls not set on "prompt" can catch one of these .. along with any of the file sharing programs ....the riaa is making shure that no one can trade files ... not just music .. its causing a contamination of everything...

one other thing is the system restore in ME can cause you to keep recyling the virous if that is the problem . this is true with xp too.

You can get rid of old viruses in your restore files by turning off restore then deleting all the restore files.
