Russo-Finnish War
« on: December 07, 2003, 04:36:49 PM »
Ran across a source which related the following facts about that conflict:

The Soviets commited 1,500,000 men to this conflict.  Only 500,000 survived.

The Finns lost only 25,000 men.

Holee..

To quote one Russian general..."We have just conquered a territory of 200,000 square miles...just enough room to bury our dead."

I knew the Russians took a licking in that conflict, but I didn't know it was that severe.

Regards, Shuckins

I think 1 million dead are pretty high set. The following page come up with 125,000 dead and 265,000 wounded. http://www.winterwar.com/War'sEnd/casualti.htm#soviet

The highest estimates I've seen before are something around 460000. Usually the numbers are between 90,000 and 250,000.

The estimates vary greatly

1 million casualties is wounded + dead combined for Winter War.

It's been often quoted lately as the Soviet archives have been examined and numbers put together. One of the Soviet prosidents, darn me if I could remember who, also has quoted the 1M number.

Which was the engagement in which the Germans sent many thousands of men to fight against Russia, but the Germans were expecting (or rather Hitler demanded) a short campaign, so the Germans had only summer uniforms? Many thousands perished because of the harsh Russian winter conditions, against which they were ill equipped.

And what was the conflict (probably the same one as the above) in which someone said in French that the enemy would be dealt with by Monsieur Janvier and Monsieur Fevrier?

I don't know about Finland, but I met M. Janvier and M. Fevrier in Chicago in 1981. My gawd, I have never ever known cold like it. One of the advantages about living on a tiny little island is that the surrounding seas have the effect of moderating the climate with regard to seasonal swings of temperatures. The downside is that it's often ****ing down with rain.
