Horatio Hornblower - Warning: SPOILERS
« on: December 03, 2003, 11:02:31 AM »
I caught the first of the two new "Hornblower" movies last night on the Arts and Entertainment cable channel.  It was a good film as far as made-for-cable-tv goes, fast pacing, decent character development, some new faces and some old ones, and a pretty good series of plot twists as to how the French knew what the British were doing.  I plan on catching the second film this evening.

Anybody else watch it?

One criticism I have is that the injured sailors/marines automatically die.  I mean, take for example the scene where the sailor opens up the galley and is caught in a fireball.  He sprawls around on the deck screaming, burning, kicking his legs, then Hornblower orders the pumps brought out to extinguish the fire in the galley, but we don't see what happens to the injured sailor.  Is he dead?  Do they tend to him?  He just sort of vanishes.

The same thing happens later on, when they're scaling the battery wall and one of the marines gets shot in the back.  Nobody seems to move to see if he's alive or dead; they just keep banging against the fortress gate.

Another quirky moment is the opening scene where Hornblower leads a raid against the captured "Hotspur".  The British and French go at it, hacking at each other with cutlasses, shooting each other with pistols, and then the cutter arrives alongside and says that peace has been declared between England and France.  Everyone just sort of stands around cheering.  Not even a "sorry old boy about hacking off your arm. Best of luck in Paris, eh what!"

I kept waiting for Hornblower to tell Styles, after Styles is condemned for accidentally leaving a kitchen oven ajar, "I didn't scourge you for nearly burning down the ship.  I scourged you for misrepresenting your capabilities."

I liked it.  Thought the ending was hooky, but I'll see the second one tonight.

Saw the 2nd film - Duty - last night.  Quite possibly the best of the whole series.  Good continuity, good pacing, good action, believable plot, enough twists in the story to keep me guessing what would come next. Up to now, I always thought either "The Duel" or "The Fire Ships" was the best of the series, but last night's movie really blew both of those away.

The special effects and set design capabilities were certainly more advanced in this film than in the previous ones.  I can't help but wonder if they didn't borrow some time in the movie lot used for "Master and Commander".  There seemed to be more scenes with the ship tilted and/or rocking with the waves this time around and it really helped convey the sense that the actors were really aboard ship.  The "Grasshopper" on the rocks was a nice bit of set construction.

The driving rain, fog, and snow were excellent ways to bring some mood to the plot.  The climactic fight with the French vessels in the narrow channel under heavy fog was pretty cool.  Probably one of the better naval battle scenes they've done.

The bit with Doughty being offered the opportunity to "escape" to the American vessel was a nice touch, too.  I was glad to see Hornblower backhandedly suggest he swim over to the "Libery", and then how he told Betsy (the blonde American woman) that Doughty would serve her well in America.

Well done!

The Books are awesome, read them WAY back when.

The Series isn't bad, pretty decent job on all naval aspects & the fights look pretty good.

Only thing I don't remember is HH getting married???

Yeah he gets married in the books, but it's less of an idealized sappy love story as it seems to be portrayed in the tv series. In fact, he's far less than the ideal husband. A much colder fish in the books.

Has anyone read the Patrick O'Brian series? Master and Commander is the first in a series of about 20.

I made it up to the 13th book and stopped a couple years ago. If you like Hornblower you should take a look.

I'd heard Master and Commander, the film, is a re-hash of plotlines from at least two books.

I plan on checking them out someday. My money goes on other things these days unfortunately.

I haven't read any of the O'Brien series yet and only got through the first 3 of the Hornblower books, but have seen all of the Hornblower films that AandE has done.  I believe the first 6 shows are available on DVD right now and the two most current ones should be available soon (if not already).  Just remember the DVD encoding business if you're buying out of region.

I did catch the movie "Master and Commander: On The Far Side of The World" with Russell Crowe on Saturday and I really liked it.  The filmmakers did a wonderful job with the sailing and battle segments.  The weather effects, the cannonades, the rolling of the boat were very well done.  Most of the film takes place aboard ship except for a brief layover in the Galapogos Islands for study and refitting.  The film ends well and leaves enough of an open ending that a sequel could easily be in the works, but also leaves closure to the film tying up the loose ends in some of the characters.

There were a few things about the film that I didn't like, but I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen the movie yet.

If you get a chance, definitely see "M&C".

Incidentally, Jamie Bamber who played the epileptic Lt. Kennedy is in the new "Battlestar Galactica" miniseries which airs Tuesday night.

If so, then that's a good thing, as it means I can see the film and still be able to enjoy the books later since the plots will be different.
