I got an email this morning from UbiSoft advertising that they were coming out with an expansion pack for IL2: Forgotten Battles.  UbiSoft will have 2 offerings: the expansion pack by itself and IL2:FB plus the expansion pack.  If you've been thinking of getting IL2:FB but haven't yet (like me) you may want to wait for the IL2:FB "Aces" version with the expansion pack included.

The expansion pack adds aircraft, "environments", and missions.

To be honest, I bought the original IL2 but never played it much because I was heavy on Aces High.  With the expansion pack, it might be worth the trouble to get IL2:FB so I'll have the whole series.

I recently baught IL2FB and My impressions are mixed.  The eye candy is great but My computer wont run it in some missions.  The worst part about it is the dumb AI and some fo the REALLY LONG missions that dont result in much action.

I only played it a little and that was a long time ago, but I'm sure I remember a time compression button for those long missions.

I'm gonna pick up the aces pack when it comes out and put a little more effort into finding a nice full or close-to-full realism group.  Suggestions welcome.

When I fly any other mission or plane the game runs fine.  When I fly the dora it is very choppy and I get maybe 2fps.  Yea the time compression button works but even with it on I still have time to smoke a cig and go to the kitchen to get another beer.

I own IL2 and IL2FB, and will purchase the Aces Expansion Pack.

I can in run it in 1024x768, but it does reduce my frames significantly so I play in 800x600 and it runs awesome.

I dont play it online although I have through Hyperlobby, I flew one time and It was pretty fun, But I believe Aces High delivers a more stable online environment.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

If you are having graphics problems or performance issues, are you running the default option for your graphics card in Il2setup?

If so, you need to select custom (it will retain the options for that graphics card) and when the list of options show up - select S3TC for texture compression. Remove the check mark in Texture Anisotropic Extension box at the bottom right if you aren't using it. If you are using it, stop using it because its going to give a big performance hit. I also use trilinear for the texture mipmap filter because there is no performance difference between that and bilinear on anything above a GeForce 2 (non MX - MX cards are crap).

The Aces Expansion pack promises "better AI", but lets face it - AI is AI and unless it cheats it won't be nearly as competitive as a human or even against a human.

If you want a full realism war, I participate in one that is online. Its into 1942 (winter I think) right now near Stalingrad but its an actual war with either side effecting front line positioning and having real goals to a mission. But don't expect constant action, patroling a target on defense sometimes leaves no action at all for the entire mission time.
