websense goes over the line
« on: February 13, 2004, 12:06:34 PM »
Access to this web page is restricted at this time.

Reason:
The Websense category "URL Translation Sites" is filtered.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

URL:
 http://www.google.ca/language_tools?hl=en

seems they don't think information pertaining to whatever a kid is researching at school can be in another language...

what makes it worse is it DOESNT block the altavista one even though altavistas has been up for a lot longer...

To borrow a line from Michael Bolton of "Office Space":

"PC Load Letter? WTF does that mean?"

Put the pieces together.  They probably did that because any kid with half a brain would otherwise do a 'translation' of playboy.com or hotasianteens.com to bypass the filters.  When you translate a site, the results come back under that site.  If you tell it to 'translate' sexygrannies.com, you'll get back page with the text in whatever language you instructed as plus all the pictures, and as far as the filter knows, it's all coming from google.com.

They don't care what language they translate it to, because despite what they might say, they are NOT reading those sites for the articles.

Pictures of naked girls surrounded by gibberish text is just fine for any red blooded teenager, you should know better.

Word. If we catch a kid working around the filter, that kid is done for as far as computers and Internet are concerned. The state is very serious about protecting our kids against porn, and they make it clear to us we will enact and enforce policy to do so.

Of course if a teacher is caught surfing porn they are terminated.
