How do I kill this crap?
« on: March 24, 2004, 08:46:14 AM »
Don't know that much about puters...  How do I kill all this spam in my email?   Is there a good program that you guys are using?

Would it be neat to have a world "do not send" list?  Since the "do not call" list thing came out I have gotten maybe on call every three months from telemarketers and used to average about 3 a day.

shoot it with one or more of your beloved guns. and stop surfing pr0n.

:aok

can't help if you don't say what you're using for your email. but at any rate, there are probably filters you can set to block out the more obvious spam.

For prevention:
I use two email accounts. One for business (Yahoo account) and my personal email that I only give out to family/friends. That way I can contain all the spam crap in the "Bulk Email" of yahoo (automatically stored there by Yahoo)

AOL, MSN, AT&T and some of the other big online providers are suing some companies that send spam.  The purpose of the lawsuit is to reduce the email clutter of those companies' users but its also going to be a test to see how effective it is to claim damages against a foreign company doing business over network lines.

I use Yahoo's email system with its built-in Bulk mail folder but I still get hammered by spam.

I recommend starting to fly buffs in the MA. 4 out of 5 doctors recommend buff flying as a way of enhancing special "anti-spam" qualities in one's karma.

Its a toughie.

Best thing is to have a "throw down" email account for everything you have to list an email addy for - like a free hotmail account.
And as mentioned above keep your "real" email account close to the vest.

Also, I don't use Outlook or Outlook Express. Just don't use them. I currently use the free Mozilla Thunderbird, which is pretty good, with its own anti-spam thingy built in.

I would suggest using Excites's free email.

They are not targeted by spammers as much as the Big 3 (Aol, Yahoo, Hotmail.) warmailers target the big 3 often using every combination of characters to sniff out your address..  whatever doesn't bounce is a legit email and thats how these guys operate...

I have yet to receive a piece of unsolicited email to my excite account in 3years...

Then again I release that address for business purposes only...  HTC's got it. My other gaming subscriptions have it, thats about it...  As long as we have skuzzy on guard im not too worried about a inside mass mailing job...

Do not release your email to any web based form or subscription..

Use this email for your personal use..

Set up a dummy account with one of the big 3 to use for web input...

My hotmail account for over 7 years (even before microsoft bought them) used to get in excess of 250 messages per day..  I still use it now for only approved domains and as a spam magnet..

Never use your ISP's email account except for trusted sources...

That will remedy your spam issues...
