I think I found what I was looking for. I know the 312th didnt see combat till 45' but I like it.

VMF-312 "Day's Knights or Checkerboarders" enter the combat until Spring/Summer 1945 and possibly believe they see the first action in April 12th 1945.  Only 17 victories while losing one pilot by the end of April and soon couple more month, their CO, Major Richard M. Day, was Killed in Action.
