Dodging tracers ?
« on: June 24, 2004, 09:15:17 PM »
I guess this could go to the tech support topic, but I doubt HTC is going to be posting intimate details of how the program works, so I'm just asking what some of you vets think.

Here's the situation. Tonight I was chasing a yak. I'm about three hundred out and each time I fire at him, he dodges the steam. Now I don't for a second think anything funny was going on nor do I believe he was dodging my tracers. I think its a net delay thing.

This is what I think is going on. Anyone who's read the articles on net delay and the way packets are sent back and forth to the host, knows about path smoothing. I'm just wondering if the frequency of enemy location packets accelorates when fireing. This would explain why the plane suddenly jinks as I shoot. The program sees I'm shooting - it updates the enemy plane location and from my end it looks like a jink when its just a correction. If thats the case, it might be worth a few rounds just to make sure the enemy is being updated more frequently.

I guess another possibility would be the packet transfer rate stays constant and I was just in a bad phase (i.e., the packets were coincidentaly updating each time before I shot. In that case I guess I should have tried to stagger the shots to break the phase.

Of course they could be dodging my tracers...

This has happened to me. I also was chasing a yak when it happend. Im sure the connection was good the night. I was about 500 or so out. Everytime I shot, he would avoid the tracers rounds. I've done it myself. It is possible. But you being 300 out.. Dunno, maybe lag.

This is exactly why I always fly with tracers OFF.   Aside from serving no purpose, they tell the enemy "I'm shooting now".

I don't like using tracers to aim with because if you do that, you're wasting ammo.

Here is a possible answer to the situation you described.
I use this technique myself.

I have MY engine sounds turned down to about 20%.
I have external guns sounds turned up to 100%.

When I'm extending and a bandit is following I use rear view and listen for his guns sounds.

When I hear a burst I jink slightly out of plane of travel then resume straight and level to continue my extension.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

Sounds like others use this method also :aok

i too am a confirmed tracer dodger. I am not sure what the guy in the target plane sees for distance compared to the shooter, but I certainly watch for tracers if I am being tailed. It is quite nice to know if the guy has tracers on or not, plus just a little push on the stick puts his aim behind the live solution....unless his tracers are off...and he is shooting canons.....

Well if the articles I read on the way planes positions are handled, are correct, dodging tracers or listening for gun shots would be impossible. You're getting the info 1/4 to 1/2 second after what the guy saw on his end. So if you see tracers (or hear bullets) and dodge, the guy shooting would have already seen them hitting you - scoring a hit. Just as you couldn't be rammed, only ram (i.e, your front end shows you running into a plane,), you shouldn't be able to dodge a tracer. You're seeing something that happened 1/4 - 1/2 second earlier.

I don't dodge the tracers at all... it's the buWWets I try to dodge.
Far too many, if not most, people on this Board post just to say something opposed to posting when they have something to say.

Like J_A_B, I fly with tracers off.  Neme never knows if I am shooting or not.  Also, if the bogey is target fixated, the first clue he gets that he is being shot at is when the tracers ping him, and some damage is already done.

I use tracers in the Flack Panzie and the PT boat.

I have a similar problem, but mine works in reverse.
If the enemy gets on my 6 {which isn't hard} all but I think one or two rounds actually miss. All the bullets seem to be magneticly attracked to my planes back side:D

Have a nice day!

Yes, and I never need an umbrella, since I dodge rain drops.  :)

I don't believe anyone can dodge bullets....not no way, not no how, no time, never.

(This is where I find out it's true, no doubt)

LOL, thats exactly what happens when I try to drive a GV! Except sometimes they are at 12, 3, or 9, in addition to my 6, either way I die, even if I manage to hit them 1st I die. I'm just gonna stick with the airpwanes.

It takes between 2 and 3 seconds for a good pilot to get a good sight picture even when he's on yr six - in most cases his first shot will miss, maybe 1% of pilots will hit you with their first burst, the rest you'll see tracer going by - wait two seconds then bob or weave your a/c slightly - you won't lose much E and you'll make your enemy miss again, if you're in the faster plane 2 or 3 times are enough to extend to 600 yards plus then he has very little chance of hitting you.....so you won't be dodging tracers exactly but.....
