A few AH2 items I've noticed
« on: July 15, 2004, 02:27:42 PM »
Just from some flying I've done I thought I'd post a couple of items:

1) Took gun damage in a Typhoon on one side (lost 1 gun).  Continued to strafe and ran the guns dry on one side but I still was shooting on the other side (the one with only 1 gun).  Not sure how that could have happened, seems wrong.  I could see having spare ammo on the damaged side from the gun that was knocked out but all the guns should have run out of ammo at the same time I'd have thought.

2) GV vs GV, I had an enemy Panzer I was shoot at at pretty long range (D2.5ish) and had range on him and was seeing hit sprites but never any damage (10-12 hits).  Moved to get a better angle and "pop" up came some trees he was behind (must have been too far to draw at my settings).  I must have been hitting the trees but there was no way to tell.  My detail distance is set low (slow PC) but there should be a way to tell that you are hitting something you can't see... different hit sprite maybe.

3) Had a bullet-hole damage in a P-47 in the windscreen, noticed it when I was using a view where I peer high and to one side of the cockpit (to look over nose).  The gunsight hid the damage though when just looking normally and I wouldn't have even noticed had it not been that I was looking to the gunsight side that one time.  Probably just a layer/sorting issue.

4) Would be nice for bombs to have some penetration value vs trees.  Right now GV's simply sit under the trees and are bomb-proof.... sure you are probably aware of this but I thought I would mention it.

2) there is a new view range mode for GV's... was posted in the readme of the version (i forgot which). you have to map a key to it like shift F4

hit that and you will then see the trees.

4) from my experiance bombs do hit through trees. i have been damaged and killed many times from bombs all the time while hiding under what i thought or was told were "safe" trees.

maybe you have been getting to close to the real ground (near the tree tops) and the bombs dont fall long enough to arm. they have always even in AH1 had to fly 1000 yards through the air to "arm" or they would just hit the ground and not explode. (try dropping your bombs right on the runway before takeoff. they will fall but not detonate)
I don't know what to put here yet.

Item #2 -- along with what JB said, I think there is a separate hit sprite -- when I hit some objects I get the large explosion ball and when I hit GVs I get the normal hit sprite.  Don't recall if this is the same for trees or not..

I'll look to see what the new GV view stuff is about.  Maybe I don't have it turned on but I was certainly hitting trees and not the GV.  The trees weren't shown at all, only after I closed a few 100 yards did I get the trees drawn.

I'm not exactly new to Jabo JB73, the bombs armed no problem.  I actually, in one case, thought I saw a crater drawn on top of the trees...  the tank was pretty buried though in the cover.  I had to come back in an Il2 and rocket him from shallow angle to finish him.
