I have heard this way too often over channel 1 it seems. But it is always after I have lost the fight! Just to set the record straight... I don't fly "awesome", I stink. It takes me 3 passes on a low C47 to get a kill.

I can't seem to get the hang of attacking with alt. advantage. I rarely find a tracking solution. Never lucky enough to score a snap-shot. It just ain't right, but I find myself more at ease, with a lone nme 3k above me, than I do with him 3k below.

I wish I could figure my way out of this psychological fix. I guess I tend to feel better losing when disadvantaged, then worrying about blowing it when I hold the advantage.

Not too sure what a dweeb is, but I think I feel like one. And the only pilot I can whine about is myself.

When you get a little more experience, you'll be like me:
you won't fly any better, but you will realize how bad the other guy is flying.  I fly like a tard and make the other tards feel like aces.

redshad, welcome to the hell of AH, like someone said, hook up with a trainer, then you'll learn to fly. Pretty soon you realize that you actually don't "learn to fly well", rather AH is a like a game of golf or a good mistress (that's for hang's cat & ex-wife story ;-): If will always frustrate you to the point where you want to leave and then it will always give you enough to make you come back ;-)

Another possibility to see it is a saying I picked up playing tennis: I'm not good, it's just the more I train, the luckier I get ;-)

Go easy on yourself ya mutt! Every now and again a tour from hell comes along when you can't do anything right. (I've had more than a few myself)

Believe me I know what its like to lose to a con that you've blown several good solutions on. You've heard me say "if I could hit a bull in the arse with a bass fiddle" many times.

Those two statements encapsulate precisely where I am at. It is good to know I'm not alone. I relectantly came to re-join my DevilDog brethren in AH, after a 10 month hiatus flying in the arcade world of SimGuild's BoB.

I went thru periods of absolute frustration, canceling my account, being talked into calling Yankie to, ah, uncancel... and finally, with the help of my squadmates, gained enough proficiency to at least have some success.

But then came the X36/CH setup. hehe

Re-learn everything again! But now I have to "think" instead of just react. But it is getting better.

And as for luck...

Last night as I flew with a couple of my squadmates, one was saying how he hasn't been able to hit the broad-side of a barn. He then proceded to get three quick kills... He said it was all luck. Funny thing is, soon after that I had a 5-kill sortie. And I "felt" the same way... all luck.

I would like to move beyond that "lucky" feeling. I want to know what I need to do... and be able to do it. I don't mind being defeated. But I do need to learn what I did wrong. I have never flown AW but I seem to remember seeing film that showed a jstick position indicator. That would seem to be an excellent addition in terms of learning from film.

Obviously there is a wide spread of knowledge, abilities, and skills in the AH community. And I know and understand the point of view that air-quake is for dweebs... but golly I do like the long drawn-out knife fight. Even if I do lose! But these types of 1v1 engagements seem to be few and far between.

BTW, I did have a far better night last night. Much of it had to do with the fact I was flying with my m8s, (The best pilot in any given arena is the one with the best wingman) but it also helped that I had thought some things thru in the process of starting this thread... Thanks fer listening.

Read. Do some training. Join a squad. Practice.

When I first got into online sims, I expected to kick butt...how wrong I was!  The learning curve is steep and brutal, yet when you land that first kill, it is ever so worth it.

Reading books is a good start.  Robert Shaw's "Fighter Combat" is an excellent, although technical, book on fighter tactics.  There are plenty sites on the web devoted to this as well. Personal memoirs of WWII are great reading too.

Hit the training arena.  Trainers are loaded with info, and no matter how great a pilot you are, they can always teach you something.  Every time that I hit the MA after a training session I notice the improvement.

Join a squad!  I learned so much, met some great freinds, and have found a great deal of enjoyment after flying with the squad.

Practice makes perfect.  Practice offline.  drop bombs on stuff.  Practice ACM.  Practice Gunnery.  Saddle up on the HTC crew and practice lobbing shells of all varieties at them.  Shoot in short bursts.  Set up difficult shots...like flying in a circle in the opposite direction from the drones.  I used to have a horrible nerve problem when I was on someone's six. Practicing on those drones helps you forget that.  Now, when you are online, you will have a much better chance of getting that guy when a shot presents itself.  You'll have practiced your gunnery, and it will feel like you're just shooting down another drone...well sort of!
