Just requested the Curios & Relics packet from ATF (actually sent an e-mail 2 weeks ago that they lost, finally got them on the phone). Does anybody have any thoughs on the license? It's an easy way to get mail order surplus weapons at mail order prices, but, the Libertarian side of me has some questions.

As I read it, being a license holder pretty much alllows the ATF access to your house whenever they want to gain access. Buying a gun with my FOID card from a dealer or through a transfer costs more (fee and taxes) but it seems to offer more privacy. Any opinions?

Unless you have a use for a lot of firearms that are classified curios and relics....  I wouldn't want the government scrutiny.   You don't really save that much.

If kerry get's elected he will probably close the curio and relic assault weapons loophole anyway.

What loophole is that? I wasn't aware that any wepaons on the Brady Bill were listed as C&R.

I had an FFL back in the early 80's but the new rules that went into effect made it impossable to keep. The largest deal breaker was that my address needed to be open to the public during busness hours, ie. a real shop. I also was not crazy to submitting to a search at any time without a warrent and as often as the BATF wanted, so no more guns at cost for me and my friends.

vor... there is none but if you say "loophole" or "assault weapon" while trying to ban anything having to do with firearms you have a better chance.   Saying em both together should really increase chances of getting a ban.

A lot of people never realize that when you get a class 2 (FULL AUTO etc.) or curio weapon or federal sales permit you agree to a no warrent search of your property.  You are also required to have adequite security systems to prevent theft.  and then when some insurance companys get involved It is not worth the hassels.

This is why I gave up the thought of having one.

IMO, not at all worth it.  
  I wonder how they have to twist it in their minds to think it constitutional to force you to give up one of your rights in order to exercise another.  I'm fairly sure there isn't an 'or' between the right to bear arms and the protection from unreasonable search and seizure.

 same reason I scrapped the idea of cooking my own whiskey a few years back.  they wanted unlimited, no warning, 24-hour access to my home for that too.

Well, it is discouraging. I don't suppose it happens all that often, but the fact that you sign away that right has me leaning towards just buying the guns using my FOID and a transfer FFL dealer. There are some that advertise for around $25 in my area. I pay taxes on that transaction as well. What a bunch of crap. Living in Cook County is another PITA.
