WASHINGTON (AP) - Employers aggressively hired new workers in October, adding 337,000 people to their payrolls after a sluggish summer, but the unemployment rate rose fractionally to 5.5 percent.

I hired 8 of them and I may be able to hire 2 more before the end of Nov

If Kerry had won the election this would be the beginning of the Kerry recovery.

Does anyone know what the natural unemployment rate is? You know, the rate caused by job transitions, etc. I remember years ago the "natural unemployment rate" was around 6%. 5.5% just doesn't sound bad to me (unless I'm one of them).

Natural unemployment is whatever you want it to be, it's only a theoretical number.

That's good news. But, as the piece notes, a lot of that was due to the Hurricane cleanups so we'll have to see how well the trend continues to play out.

Actually, it would have signaled the beginning of a financial downturn, as is very common when a democrat is POTUS.

Wall street began nose diving when it caught wind of the early exit polls. After the returns started coming in, it jumped nicely.

all of the unemployment rates are speculative.

the formula they use now should be at 0% in a good economy (a guy can dream), they only figure-in people who are eligible for unemployment benefits.

so those who quit, were fired with cause, are new to the workforce and unable to find employment, or have been unable to find work for so long that their benefits have run out, are no longer recorded as unemployed.

I've never seen anyone try to work up a figure of how many people can't find work regardless of the status of their UI claim.

If it is at 0%, that means no one is applying for UEB, which if you have ever supervised people know will never, ever happen.

Repubs:  337000 new jobs added, the economy is growing!

Dems:  They are low paying jobs for the poor and lower middle class.  The economy is not growing.

Repubs: 337000 low paying jobs, how do you know they are all low paying?  Regardless, 337000 new jobs is bad?

Dems: Yes, adding low paying jobs is bad.

Repubs:  But don't Dems claim to strive to improve the lives of the impoverished and middle class?

Dems:  Yes, but  by taxing anyone who makes over 60,000.00 a year and redistributing their hard earned wealth to the poor.  We don't actually want poor people to get jobs... then they might  have to pay taxes and they wouldn't be Democrats anymore.  Stupid Republican.

Repubs:  Ummm never mind.
