If you need the desk space, get an LCD but you will need an expensive one with under 25ms response time.  If you're not worried about desk space, you can get a great CRT for a quarter of the price that will look just as good.

Was in Dire need of a new monitor a couple months ago and had limited funds

So I picked one of these up for $79 after rebate figuring I'll get a better one later and use it as a handmedown for one of my kids systems.

Actually Im really quite pleased with it and may even go for the same one only in a larger size in the future.

Just curious what you folks think

A good CRT is $200-$250


An equivelent LCD is about twice that.  CRT are very good for the price, but a high end LCD looks better for most things, but at a price (besides the $$$).

The LCD will be a fixed resolution.  Other resolutions will look somewhere between poor and downright crappy.  You wont be playing AH2 (or any other game) at 1600x1200 on an LCD right now....and if a game runs poorly at your 'native' resolution, you are very limited what you can do.  Most 17" LCD are 1024x768 and most 19" are 1280x1024 (there are exceptions so look)

Another small drawback of LCD is that some text appears a little worse than a CRT.   Its not usually much, and you get used to it very quickly, its just the LCD is so sharp you see the fonts for what they are.

Be sure that if you LCD is for gaming, you get as low a response time as is reasonable.  25ms isnt going to cut it....20 ms is better, but Id look for 16 or lower.  Now the real trick is that these mesurements are under no standard control, and are typically the best case scenario.  A 16ms monitor is going to range from 16ms to 25ms (or so), while a 25ms monitor may have 60ms performance on some colors.  Tomshardware has a great testing method, but has only rated 2 monitors so far.  If you get a name brand Like Sony or NEC you can be reasonable sure the numbers arent too bad (except of course for the NEC fiasco a few years back!Samsung

Brightness is important but contrast ratio is CRITICAL.  A low contrast ratio means gray is black and color depth is poor (no photoshop for you).  Good LCD panels these days have 450/1 or better (Ive seen 800/1 claims.  Brightness should be 350 or better.

Just TRY before you BUY.  Ask to see it hooked up to games (bright and dark games) ask to see its interpolated resolutions just in case....to see how bad bad is.

long as dead means not working right, and not 100% off....cause most LCD pixel issues are one color being off or on, and not completly dead.  It also has no leway for something like 6-7 clumped in the middle of the screen RED all the time

Thata pretty cheap though.....beggs the question "whats the catch"...be sure you SEE it before you buy it
