Hey folks I need your help.

I let one of the little ones on the computer and it seems they picked up a spyware etc on it and now my IE is fubar.

I downloaded and installed lavasoft adware, ran it it detected a whole bunch of stuff, and removed it. But it hasn't gotten all of it seems, because the problem is there after I use IE for the first time after scanning.

I always use firefox, but some sites don't like it, so I need to use IE.

Which brings me to my next problem, I'm trying to install HL2, and in the process, after accepting the directory of installation, and hit NEXT, a popup appears and doesn't allow me to continue.

This sort of ties into an issue I've been having, i.e. when I download a utility to the desktop and try to run it, It just won't run. Nothing happens when I double click it.

Soo thats my situation, I've got a few problems and I really don't know where to start.

Please help

Sounds like you got a virus.

Go here and do the free online scan : http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Other than that run Spybot, its alot better than Adaware... : http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

As a last resort, install SP2 if you run Win XP : http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

I had that problem awhilr back. IE is still fubar. Works, but cannot change homepage. Anyways I just overdosed on spyware and adware programs. I deleted IE and ended up installing a new one, then moved to firefox.

See for instance I can't run that java on housecall because it needs to install something, but when i run it, it can't find a netscape directory...

So very fustrating... all i want to do is play HL2

yup...

It Search and Destroy Keeps finding DSO Exploit, everytime i run it.

It says it removes it, but its still there

DSO exploit came up on my brand new, just out of the box PC. It was the first thing I did, just to see if it was working. I think its something microsoft has, and so far it has not done anything bad for me.

Lets see what happens then.

I know there are some security settings I need to change off the bat, anyone know? I.e. so that I'm able to install a program?

The DSO exploit that Spybot reports probably isn't a problem.

if you come up ok with a thoughrogh virus scan, then do a system restore to the last known good point.
