Well!
Back in 45 when I was at the helm of the Missouri steaming into Tokyo Bay, or in the 50's waiting in the conning tower for the Nautilus to brake thru the polar ice and while on the USS Nimitz during her maiden voyage I never heard a peep!
Hah. So much for my straiga imitation....
It's been years but you may be right. Most of my time was spent out in the Atlantic and the wind there is incessant The sound of it going thru the mast, signal flag wires and radio antenna may simply have drowned out any engine noise. I just recall how nice and peaceful it was to be outside than in.
I wonder if someone could replace the PT sound with a large ships engine noise? I forget. When on ship in AH (DE, CA or CV) is there any sound at all besides gunfire and planes?
tangent thought! Ships need a battle stations sound, like the air radi siren at airfields, for when they come under attack!
"General quarters, general quarters! All hands man your battle stations. This is not a drill!" ....
