Cable Internet Connection?
« on: April 22, 2005, 04:28:58 PM »
Question about cable internet.  I'm currently have our main computer hooked to cable (COX) with a cable modem, and also have a wireless router (D-Link) that I use to enablemy laptop to access the internet.
I'm getting a 2nd computer.  If my son and I both play Aces High (seperate accounts) on the same connection, will it cause speed issues with the connection and/or game?

Is it better to split the cable to two computers, or just put another wireless card in the 2nd computer and play thru one connection?

Or, does anybody have any ideas or suggestions about how to do this?  Basically, we've been waiting to get another computer.  My son has been saying that when we do, he'll sign up for his own account, then we can be wingmen (or gun for each other ,etc.) in the same room.  I know I'm looking at some type of home network, but am not really sure how to go about it.

Help!!!
Thanks,
SKJOHN

Your cable connection has plenty of bandwidth for two to play AH.
I have played with wireless cards and a wired connection on three computers at the same time. Never had any problems. The only problem we have is a 2 to 3 second delay on vox. Its really only a problem if the 2 players are in the same room and you can overhear each other.

Sk John,
I'm a little confused about your network design. I'm not sure what sequence you have it wired together. Here's how it should be:

Cable>Cable Modem>Wireless Router>Computers via wireless or Ethernet.

If both of your desktop computers are in the same room with the cable modem and wireless router, your best bet is to forego any wireless connection and use ethernet cables. Ethernet has less lag and less security headaches, than wireless.

Your wireless router probably has at least one ethernet port, hopefully more than one. But if it has only one you can get a switch that connects your two computers via Ethernet to the one Ethernet port on the wireless router. The cost of a switch will be less than the cost of a wireless card for your son's computer, and his new desktop will almost for sure have a builtin Ethernet port on the mobo. ( Make sure you get one that has builtin Ethernet).

That's how I would do it. Then use the wireless connection for your laptop when you want to to work in other rooms in your house.

Your cable connection can handle two AHII sessions at the same time with no problem.

If your desktop is connected to your cable modem via USB cable, dump it and put an Ethernet card in your computer (or use your builtin Ethernet port).  AHII users have consistenly had problems with USB connections between their computers and their cable modems.
