Whats best- got a intel w/sound on board (865perl) or would there be any gain in disabling the onboard sound and using a 60$ card ?

Sound onboard or card?

I use my RealTek onboard sound. Unless you're using a 5.1 surround system (I'm not, I'm using headphones) there is really no need for a high-end sound card.

Sound onboard or card?

Highend, no, but onboard sound is bad compared to a card system. They eat CPU cycles. The AC'97 and ones like it are all around bad quality. Don't even get Skuzzy started; he's ranted on this a couple hundred times. :D
