I have an X45 and pedals. I like it alot. I'm still getting used to the setup as I didn't get to use it much before I had to take a break for a family matter. But it works well and is very good.

Pedals are really the way to go. I was skeptical. wouldn't have it any other way now. Just know that it will take some serious getting used to when you make the change.

Pedals are worth it, not any expert on HOTAS though, I use Saitek Cyborg Evo.  I don't ever want to go back to twisty:aok

I use the X45 with pedals. If your going with pedals and a HOTAS, i would recommend the X45 over the X52. The X45 rocker arm that is usually dedicated to rudder can be broken into extra buttons. Not sure if the twisty can, but I would imagine it woud be difficult to control since just using the stick sometimes causes twisting.

Skychimp I ran the X45 system in the past. It's a decent stick but be sure to get the extra warranty. I had two of them go out on me. Both for multiple switches.

I do recommend pedals though over the X45s rocker arm. I switched to a CH setup with pedals and I'd never go back to just a stick and throttle setup. I find that more often than not I'm inputting rudder to get my shots. The X45s setup wasn't as comfortable and wasn't really precise. It may just be me though. I do know I can pull off some fairly nice reversals with my pedals. Something I could never do before with the X45.

Id swear I just got done posting about controlers....Oh wait, I did.

Id say having flight pedals is the biggest issue.  They are worth it.  Having a HOTAS instead of a quality flight stick just puts more functions at your fingertips.  Pretty clear what I prefer in my other post.

X52 allows you to move to HOTAS and still stay with twisty if you wish.

To my mind the move from twisty to pedals is the biggest jump you will make.

Also I do not know another stick with more functionality than the X52

I have set the mouse bits on the throttle to emulates key strokes and then programmed everything else in AH.

So without using Modes or AH shift functions I have direct access to

Stick

fire primary
fire both
fire secondary
toggle clipboard
toggle WEP
toggle zoom
zoom in/out zoom view
zoom in/out map view
POV (8way)
range vox

pitch
roll
trim rudder (I have pedals so use the twisty for rudder trim)

Stick base

auto speed
auto level
auto angle
toggle gear
toggle hook
toggle damage report

Throttle

Lower flap /gear up (GV)
Raise flap /gear down (GV)
toggle dive brake
POV (4 way) Up,Down, pan left, pan right
toggle combat trim
tuned vox
toggle engines
toggle sec weapon/main weapon(GV)
Open - ac door/gv door/chute
calibration mode
calibrate

Throttle
RPM
Trim pitch
Trim roll

The weakest aspect of all Saitek stuff is the POV switches......they all use the same type. The hat design of the X52 is more comfortable than the X45. The JS spring on the X52 is light the JS spring on the X45 is strong (but no where near as resistant as the Cougar) I prefer something between the X52 and the X45 re JS spring so have added a split rubber washerabove the spring.
