Nightmare AAR (Bombers)
« on: November 19, 2005, 01:02:03 AM »
Nightmares flew b17s with P47 escort to A63.  We had a fantastic formation. Hope you LWs liked it :) We were hit early and hard. After a furious few minutes our flight of 18 (reduced to 15 due to boot) was reduced to 7 B17s.

We struggled to reform and with many of us on 2 engines we made it to A63. We dropped our ord, not a great drop, but seeing how we were listing and all shot up, we were just glad to get there. Our fighters killed alot of enemy. So did our bombers.

On the way out Wezman got separated from what was left of our main group. We turned after the drop to head home and someone screamed 190s! I think it was iko. They were relentless. They disected us like some sick science project. One after another. I was down to one operational tailgun with 130 rounds. I hit a couple, but one by one all my planes crashed and burned.

Suddenly, Wezman comes over the radio.."Im still alive, and am trying to get home." A glimmer hope. One of us might get home. We waited in the tower...him giving position reports of where he was...trying to avoid enemy planes. After a long while we saw him approach the runway. He made it!

We got whacked..but we took a few with us!

Sounds like you took out a lot of my Fate squadron pals :-)

we came in on a high group of B17s and P47s over (I think 4,12).. we caught them over the north channel at about 28k feet.

We were in with two other flights and beat up some 17's pretty bad.  We were in 190a's

At that altitude we just couldn't make power, it was all we could do to maintain altitude, much less actually fight.

Well fought, the 17's and 47's (seemed like an ocean of 47's) gave us a hard beating.  But not before we put a lot of hurt on those bombers.

The MaW was part of the NightMares escort, hoked up with them before the turn and spotted the 190's coming in 2 or 3 at a time.  We tried to head them off, but they were too fast, my plane was shakin like I was parked on a fault line.  Still we managed to force them low...but then even more of them showed up.  I am pretty sure there were more of us than them at that point, but I always seemed to have 2 or 3 on me.  I finally chased one low and sprayed enough to force him into the silk.  Lit another one up pretty good but dont know if that was enough damage to force him down or not.

By then we wre trying to re-form and get back to the buffs, but on the way there, 38MAW and I were jumped again and I lost some fairly important parts.  I dragged one low and 38MAW picked him off my tail.  Now we had no hope of catching the buffs and 38 was out of ammo, so we headed home to rearm.  The guests we got from the nightmares (HavocA20 and plumbit) did some good work up there too, and I turned squad lead over to Havoc at this time.

Now the embarrassing part....I landed and taxied toward the pad.  Just before I reached it I did a F4U style ground loop and broke my prop.  38MAW rearmed and rolled out and wound up with 9 kills for the night.

Nightmares, MAW and esteemed foes.  Was a tough, tightknuckled night :)
