It's a classical case of religion vs science - or rather it is a good example of secular morals/ethics meeting religious ones. The religious one has the advantage of being able to claim divine intention and is likely to do so.
I believe research of this kind does not harm humans or human kind - quite the opposite. The church has in the past tried to stop advances in technology that in the end has benefitted mankind tremendously. I hope it does not succeed this time.
Even if Bush says "nay", research will continue. Without state funding in the US, with state funding in many other nations.
