Last Flight (AAR 2/10/06)

Here is a AAR I made today. Big thanks to those who followed me and fought with me: Litjan, candela, Fogold, LitDoc, meAM. To our enemies we encountered (while I was alive): CBFAS1 and Jaluka6.

Ocktober 10th, 1943

It was a calm day in France. We had just came back from an air alarm after a flight of B17s passed through. We weren't called to intercept though, 109's from the other airbase were already en route for them and we were told to wait since we didn't want to waste fuel for our mission at hand.

Our mission called for a fighter sweep along the coast of Britain, out of range of the flak. We would hope this would stir up some fighters to engage us in preparation for a ground attack or if we were lucky, catch any stragglers from the earlier B17 raid.

We started off with six FW-190A-5, with drop tanks and "buff hunter" guns; 20mm's.

We took off after what seemed to be an enternity, all Focke Wulfs sucessfully taking off and getting in the air. We circled the base to grab some altitude before heading off on our route. We formed up at 5k and begin our lazy ascent North from the airbase. It was a really nice sight to see our planes in formation.

All six of us kept our eyes and ears open. We were expecting either Spitfires or Thunderbolts. The Spit we were used to, but the "Jug" we have been having problems with. I heard that Otto fired all his ammunition into one only for it continue flying. I believed that Otto is just a bad shot and was probably telling tall tales. Either way, when something is armed with eight .50's and is just as fast as our crates, we still remained cautious.

We climbed for a few minutes, reaching an altitude of about 12,000, as per orders to begin our sweep. We had been listening to forward radar posts and over-the-radio reports of what was in the area. We heard mostly air transport traffic and remnants of a bomber mission farther south and west of us, too far away.

Then out of the sky, we saw a glint. According to radio and radar, it couldn't be ours. As we neared, we saw it. A Mosquito by itself. We figured it was doing some recon. Unfortunately it was above us and it decided to be adventurous and attack us!

We broke off, dropping our tanks and switcing to main tanks. My wingman Hpt. Litjan banked right to draw the two-engined brit away to follow him while the rest of the squad began to climb and get above him.

The manuevers worked, as we led him around and snared him our trap. Soon the Mossie was underneath and circled by us. Unfortunately as we fought on, we got closer to the coast and flak began to come up in giant puffs. We weren't afraid as we weren't directly over Dover. The Mossie than began to climb, and I, with a lot of energy build up, climbed up sharply to follow. I let loose with all my guns and scored a few hits!

((British intelligence. After recovery of what was left of this FW-190, we found a gun camera. The Mosquito is shown here taking direct hits:))

The Mossie wasn't done for however, and zoomed below me. My wingman Herr Fogold took after him. I glanced around and counted my planes. Still all together. Then I noticed another dot. It was out of place and then I realized it as it was blazing in towards one of my wingmen. A Spitfire!

He quickly came in with all guns firing, barely missing his intended target. I turned to assault the threat but I feared a stall as I had used it up as I climbed with the Mossie.

I feared the worse as the fight progressed. The fights continued with the squad split over the Mossie and the Spit. As I was turning to get into position, I hear my wingman call that the Spit was closing on my six! ****! I felt hits on my plane but I couldn't tell what. I begun to spin and as I did, I caught a glimpse of my vertical stabilizer. I was cooked!

The G's were quickly pushing me into the plane. It was getting unbearable to the point where I felt like there were thousand pound stones tied to my limbs. The hatch release for my cockpit window seemed miles away...

The ground seemed to come quicker than I thought. The flak kept firing at me, believing I was trying to fake them out and strafe them when I got low enough. I felt like it was my last few moments on earth were coming. I began to pray for my family, my brother and my wingmen. I had hoped that my leadership up to now had been more than adequate.

I could hear Herr. Fogold's victory yell over the Mossie. In all my time of going down to earth, I had realized that I didn't make any call over the radio of my plight.

I looked out the window I saw rolling hills, trees houses. The place where we were supposed to conquer. I was shoved so deeply into the corner of my cockpit from G's that all I could do was pray and then...

Hoped you all enjoyed it ;)

Today also marked the first time flying since September. I re-subbed today because of the AvA arena. I"M BACK!!!!

Oh and heres a wallpaper version of Fogold's attack on the Mossie: http://img133.imageshack.us/img133/7202/fogoldwallp8mh.jpg

Nice report, I enjoyed it!  I've been away from the game a long time and miss it.  And it's been killing me to see the CT get such a boost from the name change and RPS and I can't re-sub my account for at least another month.
