usually memory and hard drive can be accessed by small panels on the bottom of the computer.  Any little panels that look like they can come out with removing one screw are generally safe to open to take a look.

I'd check the manual though...  Check online or with gateway to see if you can find the manual because they sometimes have a little section on upgrading memory or the hard drive.

Do a google search for that model number and the word "upgrade" or something like that.  Might get lucky and find someone who's documented the same thing you're trying to do.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

Looks like the RAM & HD are easy for that Gateway, tater.

HD install:

RAM:
http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/Solo_Series/P1150/p115016.shtml

Adding RAM to a laptop can literally make it feel like a new system, add as much as you can... also according to Gateway, the largest hard drive that Solo will accomodate is 30G

Edit:
Also, keep your kid viri free, for free:
http://www.avast.com the HOME version is free, it updates itself, and in 4 years its never once failed me... there is NO REASON to spend $$ on virus protection.

These folks are very cool too, I sent them a $50 donation with a "thanks" for keeping my systems clean, for free, over the past few years... 2 weeks later I got a deluxe edition box with a free registration code and a toll free tech support number... nice folks at avast.
