Technically you are correct; they used an altimeter to explode the ordnance at preset altitudes, & they used radar to give them this accurate altitude setting ( we don't have such radar in AH ) & they fired the 88's in batteries & later in the war they began to fire a rectangle "box" that was very deadly.
HiTech could implement control of batteries of 3-5 88mm guns for players & give them a reading that approximates altitude of target so they could preset the altitude & be more in keeping with how they were really used ( I think it would be complicated to code ). Or just give control of one gun per player & place 3-5 90mm guns with proximity fuzes on or around a field , it'd be a more simple design to implement I would think since they already have the 5inch/128mm naval guns with POZIT fuzes ( less complicated to code ). They would be relatively useless for low, fast flying aircraft because of the slow rate of rotation & elevation. They could then place a few quad .50 or quad 20mm emplacements for the low & fast attacks to supplement the 37mm's now on the field, & they could turn the 37mm's into 40mm Bofors ( I'm not a fan of the Bofors myself ) .
