How do I change a color photo to black and white..

I actually want it not black and white but..the old looking..kind of ..white is light tan..and the black is well..a lighter black..

I have an old photo of a PAN Clipper that is that color..im trying to reproduce a shot of  a b-17 flying over Golden gate in that old style color filter

for print or for web?
i hope you mean grayscale  cuz black and white can mean only black or white dots (pixels)

simpliest way is
go to image ->adjustments , pick  hue/saturation
chk "colorise" box
now move saturation slider to the left
and play a little bit with hue slider to find "yellowish" tone of old photo

simple "b/w" you can get just by moving saturation slider or just convert to grayscale in image-> mode ->grayscale

Well...if you want to change it to a gray scale shot like an old BandW photo in photo shop... go to Image-Mode-Grayscale.

The other thing you mentioned (the yellowed black and white photo) is known as Sepia. But I'm not sure how to do that.

Good Luck

A quick way:

after you change the image to grey scale, convert it back to a colour file format then press Ctrl U  you can put in a quick tint doing it this way, just play with the sliders, saturation hue ectra.
