I too am new to the game but have been using my X52 in other flight simulators with out fault.  I did have the same issues at first but I changed the throttle to the Z axis versus the slider then went onto calibrate it with out any trouble.  You just have to make sure that you are using the throttle in analog mode and using Throttle 1.  That fixed my problem of all or nothing.  But I can not get it to inverse the controller input.  When I am at zero power on the throttle I am at full power on the plane but full power in the plane is zero on the throttle.  If you can figure that out please can you let me know.
thanks, and I hope that I was able to give you a hand.

Go into "Map Controllers." Pick the input that needs to be reversed. Check the "Advanced" checkbox. On the swing-out, check or uncheck the Invert Axis checkbox.

Thanks for the advice OOZ662 but unfortunetly I had all ready tried that to no avail.  I was wondering if anybody else with the X52 has had that problem. It seems to work in all the other flight sims that I have.  Thanks

I had that problem twice. Fixed it both times with the above.

Did you make sure you selected the throttle in the "Map Controllers" window, before checking the "Invert Axis" in the "Advanced" pane?  The "Advanced" pane shows which axis you are modifying at the top.

Backup the Joystick config files (.jsm files), then delete them (If only JS setup is a problem, this beats deleting the entire settings and/or reinstall game). Try setting up your JS from scratch:
How to set up your Joystick

Also, make sure none of your game folders are write protected.

jfergie I had that exact problem last night. Somehow, I had accidentally assigned my throttle to a button in the course of doing something else. Here's what I did.

(1) in the Map Controller Window, right hand column, look for Throttle 1. Is it assigned to a button, or to your actual throttle? You can change it to your throttle by highlighting your throttle, clicking on modify, then choose "Throttle 1" (I think it is under Analog Inputs) if I remember correctly.

(2) If you see no assignment of "Throttle 1" in the right hand window, then highlight your throttle control, click on Modify, and then choose Throttle 1. It should work just peachy.
