New laptop
« on: November 25, 2006, 06:45:29 PM »
So what's the best laptop out there these days?  I'll probably wait till after xmas.

In the $2,000 plus range

I'll use it for work and will need a larger screen if possible.

Any suggestions?

It is :) The only exception is when I did a flatten and reload (Dell puts a bunch of junkware on their systems) I have Base System "question marks" looking for some drivers that I have no idea where they are (they are not on the driver installation disc and "base System" doesn't exactly give you a clue as to what it is!) Other than that, I am very happy.

Shot 348 pictures yesterday at a wrestling tournament in a low light situation. I had to batch edit these pics for exposure when I got home, took about 2 minutes with the new laptop. The old laptop would have taken about 20 minutes to batch process that many pics.

Im getting my new 17" HP laptop on wednesday. The reveiws and stuff i have seen online on this laptop is good. The model im getting is in the Core duo Hp Pavilion 8000 series and not the new core 2 duo 9000 series that has had some annoying problems. Its those problems that made me go for the 8000 series.

I know a buddy of mine is very happy with his Dell 9400 if you dont need PCMCIA slot and a numeric keypad.

A third model you should look at in the 17" range is the Toshiba Sattelite P100/P105 series. They have also had good reviews.

A fourth is the HP nx9420 series. It does not have the glossy screen incase you dont like those.

I haven't exhausted the pool of candidates yet, but I will say that Bianca here leaves little to complain about :)

FWIW Dell 9400 = Dell E1705 (One is European number...9400) and mine has a PCMCIA slot.

Numeric keypads are for those who never learned to type properly in QWERTY. ;)

Then have a closer look at the Toshiba Sattelite P100/P105 series. Sturdy and well equipped at a reasonable price. I would take it over a Dell any day.
