Another W2K forced landing...
« on: November 26, 2001, 11:48:00 AM »
Problems with 3Com USB ADSL modem under W98 forced me to migrate to W2K. Now W2K forced me to migrate to Age of Empires   :(

I'm able to install, select video resolution, etc. I get to see the initial clipboard. When I click online, It passes all phases, but when It finally gets to MA, just CTD and disappear with no message at all. Same if I try to fly offline. No problem but when I click on "offline", the thing will CTD with no failmessage whatsoever.

My system's specs:

Athlon Thunderbird 900MHz
512 Mb RAM
Voodoo 5500 64 Mb
Saitek X36
Last MoBo drivers installed
DirectX 8.0a
Win2k + Service Pack 2

Is there any fix to this?
Do you recommend to partition the disk and leave a W98, a W2K and a Linux independent partitions?

Thanks in advance.

Pepe

Running W2K no problems.... 933 p3.. make sure desktop resolution same as game..(video.cfg) delete this and start again... also have x36 (35? whatever) runs well... have gf3 but... oh, are you in 16bit color or 32bit? try 16 bit color... other then that I think we have similar systems and I think w2k is great..... haven't rebooted in a month...

This system should run fine.

Try un-installing AH.  Then use Windows Update and make sure everything is up done as far as security and compatibility updates.  Next, install DX 8.1.  Then re-install AH.  See if that does it.

I had a similar problem caused by an out of date terrain .res file that for some reason wasn't updating itself.  I *think* it's safe to remove the terrain .res files and AH will re download them.  Of course, reinstalling AH should accomplish the same thing.

Bloom, you hit the provervial nail  :)

I reinstalled all stuff, like Leph said, including AH, with same sad results. Then I uninstalled AH again, and installed only 1.08. Voila! worked. Then 1.08 to 1.084. worked. Then 1.084 to 1.085...Msg Box: some kind of error Mindanao terrain could not be updated, blah, blah, blah....tried to run, and a fresh, funny, cute CTD. The problem was that even if I downloaded and reinstalled each and every terrain, still crashed each time I tried to fly. Only solution: installed up to 1.084 and then let the AH updater do the trick. It worked, and now I can fly. Still, my terrain list shows empty

Again, thanks all for the help. This UBB, and you guys are the most useful tool.

Still, there is a big framerate problem. I just can't fly at 1200x1024 while with W98 I could do it in the 20fpish area. Now have to go down to 1024x768....let's just hope FSAA is as good as it seems   ;)

Pepe Voodoo line of cards has not been supported for ages and your problems might be because of not-so-perfect drivers for w2k.

Maybe voodoo users are better off with 98..

V5 5500 is still a good card.  And yes, it has the best FSAA scheme ever made IMO.  I run 1024x768 2xFSAA and it works great.

Oh... be sure to hit Cntrl-C and turn off the funny sparkly ground texture, that just slaughters my framerate.
