Help with new skin
« on: March 14, 2007, 12:40:46 PM »
I have down loaded an F4U-1D and modified it with the markings of VMF 323 Squad from WWII.

The graphics look great in my editor!

I have saved the file as a bit map image (.bmp) but I can’t seem to get the skin to load in the offline game or the Skin Preview Program.
When I try to use the skin preview program and brows the file the file is there but the program will not recognize my bit maps.
I must be missing a step some where?

I do notice that all the files in the game have a (.res) extension.

All advice is greatly appreciated.:(

Please follow the link in this post:

http://forums.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=108740

It is "sticky" posted, and will not move down from the top of the forum list.

It contains a link that walks you through the steps for getting skins to display properly.

Yes this is exactly what I did, I followed the instructions very carefully and the skin dose not appear in the hanger in the off line area and will not open in the skin viewer.

That is why I am asking for help.

So can you give me some advice or just regurgitate the obvious.

I read every thing on this site I could before I attempted to create this skin.

thanks

What directory name did you give it?

EDIT: Forgive the curt tone in my previous post. 90% of folks don't bother reading anything :D

EDIT2: you made a comment about browsing for files in the skin viewer. You don't browse for files in the skin viewer. You leave it as-is, and you choose the plane you want from the drop box. When you get to the plane you want, you should have a second drop-box listing the directory names of all available custom skins for that plane. I.e. for a C2 you'd choose c205 and the second one would have 3 entries, named "c205_1" "c205_2" "c205_3". <-- just an example

Thank you for your reply.

I named the File, F4U1D_1

The skin viewer is seeing this file name and displaying it in the drop down box.
When I select the new F4U1D_1 file the original F4U1D skin displays not the one that I manipulated.
For some reason it still will not display my skin?

I have attched a jpeg copy of my skin.

Note: the one in my file for the game is saved as a bit map.

Wow that is one sharp looking skin.  Looks almost professionally done.

I love the smoke effect on the guns and from the engine exhaust.  How ever did you get that feathered that nicely?

The placement of the wear and tear (scratches) looks excellent as well.  What references did you use?  Care to share?

Why did you put a highlight down both fusalage sides?  Could you explain that?

If the skin viewer shows the directory name, but does not display the bitmap properly, I'd think first-off that the file wasn't saved properly into 8-bit (256 color) format. That's my first guess.

BTw, I just noticed.  You realize that photo is post WWII.

There are buzz codes under the left wings, these were added after the war.
