Stupid Mistakes
« on: May 26, 2007, 07:34:31 AM »
When will I ever stop making them?  It's like that feeling in 4th grade when throwing a snowball at the school bus  -  The moment it leaves your hand you know it's gonna be a hit on the winshield, wish you could have it back but it's already flying true.

Every tour I look at my performance, think about my deaths and realize more than half of them were avoidable and due to me making some stupid, impatient, or just plain dumb action.  Will it ever end? Does anyone else have these issues?  Is it possible to aquire proper dicipline levels in a cartoon game?

I did it again last night.  Spotted some B24's and gave chase.  I was co-alt, in a 190, fast but coming up from his six.  I saw his target and tried to get there while he was lining up in bomb sight.  Just as I closed to guns distance, I saw the eggs drop and knew the pilot would be switching to guns.  Did I break off and climb out above and ahead of the buffs?  I had all the time in the world to do so...

No I sat there at dead six and had my cockpit redecorated with my animated brains.  I think it was Bruv in the buffs. Back in the tower I was so ticked at myself for doing such a stupid thing, and of course inwardly swore I would never do that again, but the funny part is, it's not the first time and strangley if I was a betting man I would bet it will happen yet again.  I wasn't born stupid and thought we were supposed to get smarter with age and experience but yet...I continue to make these dumb moves.

me thinks you takin it way to seriously, who cares you got killed when you could have avoided it. I like getting into fights and auguring when i get bored with it. makes the other guy feel like he accomplished something. stop taking the airplane game so serious is my opinion :aok

A technique I use is to keep my own kill tally like a real pilot does in his log book.

I just use the Notepad program in Windows.

Keep a record of the date, plane, enemy plane and see how many kills you can rack up before you get killed.

stupid is as stupid does! Man do I fit that mold !!! I know exactly how you feel Stampf. I have found that over time, with patience, it is possible to over come stupidity.

I have been flying for years, and years. I hope some day to get to the point that I have better than a 50-50 chance to win any 1 vs 1. I don't have to be one of these killers like Wldthing, Dred, or Dolfo/killnu, tho it would be ok
:D  I have noticed that over the last few months, while not flying as much as I use to, I am starting to make better decisions. Maybe I'm aging well or maybe its less beer, who knows, but I feel I'm making some headway.

In the senario you posted, in the old days it would have ended much the same way for me, but these days if I was really interested in the buffs, I would have taken the time to set them up better and made my slashing attacks on them.

So in closing, if an old fart like me can see the light at the end of the tunnel, there could be hope for you too!

....................unless of course your REALLLY stupid :D

You're not the only one Stampf. As soon as I see a formation of buffs, all rational thought, and flying, depart my immediate area. I tell myself everytime I get hosed by buff guns.... "Never again!" At least until the next Buff comes along.:aok

I'm doomed.  I still make them.

I fly infrequently, and I enjoy seeing pilots exhibition of patience and craft.

Stampf, you are treading on dangerous ground my friend! If you learn from your mistakes and do not continue to make them you will be ubiquitously despised and hated. There is nothing in this game more popular than someone who continues to up from a CAP'd field, continues to attack buffs from dead 6, continues to stallfight 18 dweebfires on the deck at the foot of their own field etc...If you start playing smart you will be public enemy #1 and called all sorts of names. Noone likes a pelt meiser who won't give it up...It's just human psychology...

My suggestion to you is to ask Skuzzy to lock this thread immediately and Forgetaboutit!

When I see buffs, first thing I do is to see if 999000 is on, if he is I pass them by.

I make mistakes constantly, and often the same ones over and over.  Mostly I don't let it bother me as long as I'm having fun.

As I see it, there are so many ways to make a mistake in this game that to fly mistake free consistantly would take a near miracle.  Sometimes I come close as I'm sure we all do on those "on" nights.  Other nights... a few too many cocktails, a little too much testosterone, a little too much adrenaline pumping (or too little) and... oh well.

Another consideration:  We all play the odds.  If you've had success lining up on a buffs 6 in the past then doing so again makes sense.  Sure, there might be a better way but if the risk/reward experience is appropriate then going for it again and getting shot down, while it can be looked at as a mistake, is simply playing historically favorable odds.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

The one's that drive me nuts are the "heros" that dive low on the deck into a mass furball...lose their E and then start screaming on VOX that they are trailing 6! Then get all bent out of shape when their fellow countrymen don't save them.  :lol

Hi Stampf,

I have gone on a bit of bomber frenzy recently.  As i'm always flying fighters I wanted to get to do some bombing/gunning practice.

I decided to up and hit the town you were near.  As i was flying west the garage called with details about my new car saying i could come pick my new car up :)

I strayed slightly too far west and ended up over a CV i didnt know nothing about.  Corrected my course when i think oh bugger a 190.   I'm surprised you took such a bad angle with no E.   I thought you were trying to get me just as i was in the bombsight.

Don't feel too bad i've been getting pretty good at gunning with the extra practice.  I now know that FIRE ALL exists whereas i used to only use my primary trigger on my stick resulting in me using only one drones guns  so now i have a good aim and extra firepower   ;)

I also managed to sink a cv with Ar234's on the 2nd ever time ive flown it.

dittos.. nothing more fun for me than getting on the deck in a jug or k4 with 5+ attacking you, and making most of them auger before finally succumbing.

Stampf... do what is FUN, if fun is not getting killed ever, than do that, if it is surviving an 10 on 1 furball....enjoy it.
