It was a blast.
Fell behind the group (running on 2 engines and didn't know it) about half way there, but got 'er up to 22K. Ran into a few 109's but our "little friends" took care of that problem for me. Barely fired any rounds...no need. Then a minute before target I had 110 and 109's all over the place. One of the largest furballs I've seen on AH. Like blkmagc said: "pepper on the windshield"...they were everywhere. I had 2 109's on my 6 when some of our escorts handled them; meanwhile I overshot the target dealing with the 109's at the TG and changed course for thier AF.
Let see: I had to change course, watch my 6 and gun, set the bombsights, remember to open the bomb-bay doors, remember that my bullets could kill friendlies, my group was 10 miles away, re-calibrate again...oh and of course...a 10mph crosswind to boot. Meanwhile a huge air-to-air battle was ensuing 3K away from me. In the melee I was able to destroy their bomber hanger, 2 ammo dumps and barracks. So not bad really.
I thought the groups' leadership was great as was the escorts. The escorts really shined this mission. They did an awesome job and they saved my bacon at least 3 times. (Thanks Magoo and all the others). After landing, I didn't even get a scratch and I had almost all my ammo. That alone attest that our escorts did their job well.
Many thanks also goes to the "enemy". They weren't easy to deal with and I thought their defenses were pretty good as were their formations and attack plans. A "well done" is well deserved for those folks.
So in a nutshell...it was a blast. Can't wait for October.
