Ahh..the bygone days when a man could afford a wife, kids, house, car, etc, etc, on one average working salary.

Today you need three people in the household working like dogs just to pay the freakin' bills.

It's true, blooz. If I tried to support my family on my wages. We would need support from Social welfare people or a charity.

I left an amazing job to stay at home with our 3 sons. Financially it sucked almost every single day.  But it was (without a doubt) the absolute best years that our family will ever have. I stayed at home with our boys for 8 years, until the youngest was in full-day school.

And actually I agree with almost everything on that 1955 list.  Who on earth says that you can't have that kind of respect & consideration for your husband today?  And having it doesn't automatically make him a pompous jerk who thinks you need to be 'pregnant & barefoot in the kitchen.'  Chances are that he's got an equal (if not greater) amount of respect for you ~ and treats you pretty golden. :)

In the suburban 1950's:

1 family car.  (maybe no car if you lived near public transportation)  A second car was a big... big... deal The rich folks in town had a second car...  The Doctor could even afford a Caddy!

1 2 bdrm home, 'bout what... 1500 sq ft maybe less? Levittown homes were 1000 sq ft.

Wow, you have a TV?

Live like it was the 1950's and you could afford it on 1 breadwinner too.
