Try zipping through the deathstar at 350mph, and I bet it'll hit you pretty bad. Do it at 200-250mph an it might miss altogether.
Looking at the way it's coded, this isn't true. As you fly along, there's an "ack box" drawn around you. By pulling high or low G's, increasing your speed, or increasing your distance from the guns, the box grows larger. Since guns fire at a random spot inside this box, your odds of being hit diminish with the above. With random systems, however, there'll always be the guy that never gets hit and the guy that gets lit up.
Same thing applies for puffy ack, except that's a cube and larger.
