We watched Flags of our Fathers first. I don't think that there was an intended order of viewing. If we watched the wrong one first, we didn't recognize that it was out of order.

Yea, Flags 1st. There are references in Letters that could be missed if you watch it 1st, but both are good standing alone too.

I watched Flags first..

The Premise on Flags is the back story of the men that raised the flag on Suribachi. The Premise on 'Letters' is the Japanese perspective on their realization and national determination that they would not be leaving that island alive.

... bear in mind the horror of what you'll see is just the tip of the Pacific Crisis iceberg. It wasn't till Okinawa that the 'handwriting' on what an Invasion of the Japanese mainland would entail. Iwo was rough.. Okinawa was far, far worse.
The price of Freedom is the willingness to do sudden battle, anywhere, any time and with utter recklessness...

...at home, or abroad.

To be honest I thought Flags of our Fathers was a flop.  Didn't like it at all.  Hardly any historical information and not much about the battle.. just some disgruntled people trying to figure out who actually put up the flag and then the propaganda.  Acting was not the greatest either.
