Have you tried pressing 'H' when it appears to die?

Also note, if you have to turn off your computer to get your mouse back, then it sounds like Windows is losing the mouse.  Is it wireless?

Is it connected to the USB port?  If so, th eport may be getting reset due to too much power being drawn on the bus.

if you press h(accidendially) while in game the coursor(mouse) will stop working. Simply press h again and BOOM, its back in action!    :P

Then, unmap the mouse control mode key so it doesn't happen again. If you are using a joystick, that is.
